I would like one, but I looked on E-bay and I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for. Is there a particular model or will any model for Corvette work? Any extras I need to know about? Thanks...
Re: Need to buy a HyperTech programmer... (96CollectorLT4)
goto hypertechs web site and get the specific model number you need and make sure that is what they are selling. I am looking into one as well and see people listing various part numbers for the LT1.
I guess another big thing is that you need to be sure it has been returned to original otherwise you can't use it. Somehow it knows what VIN car it programmed so it wont work on another car until you put the stock setting back into that car. Not sure what happens if you get one that didn't have this done?
This particular model covers not only LT1/4 Vettes, but also 96/97 LT1 Camaro/Firebird and 96 Impala SS... I have one and it's being used on it's 3rd car now (1 at a time of course)...
If this was last fall...I had one for you (sold now)
I have the LT1 Hypertech, and it MUST have been returned to stock programming because it's a simple device.
First thing it does is downloads your cars programming and stores it in memory (and there is room for only 1 car).
Then it uploads the new programming (either their "optimized" program or your own combo).
So, if the dealer made changes to your programming...that is what you would re-install when setting it back to stock. But if the person selling it didn't set it back to stock before shipping it to you...basically you would be scr*wed!

Looks like you have an LT4. I'm told the LT4 programmer is different from LT1. My programmer has a sticker that says "96 Corvette 5.7L LT4 Manual Only"

It looks like the LT1 and LT4 are the same. Man alive, I priced this thing out and it was like $700 CDN. Holy shiznit, and they only give you about 10% gain. that's alot of green for only 30 HP.

Actually, $700 CDN isn't bad at all for 30HP but you won't get that with a PPIII. In fact, you probably won't get much of anything. Some people here report that they actually lost HP. I bought one but only to get the fans to come on sooner and to tighten up the shift points in my AT (which is N/A for you). There's no need to purchase one new as they always seem to come up for sale either here or on eBay for around $150-175 US (that's where I got mine). Like everyone says, just make sure the programming has been restored prior to buying one used...

Incorrect...totally different programs...
Well I went to the website and the LT1 and LT4 had the same part #!!!! I'm just reporting what I saw, not saying that your wrong, but the same prt number tells me they are the same.

Heck, I'd probably sell mine for that since I'm not using it.

Since you have a GS, I'll make the assumption that you have a 30027? If so, I may be interested. But, 96 collectorLT4 should have first shot if it's available.
Re: Need to buy a HyperTech programmer... (96CollectorLT4)
I am not sure they are worth the money. I have one on my 96 LT-1 auto and really can't say I gained any thing other than running cooler by having fans come on sooner. I played with it at the track program installed and with out.
I was really disappointed wiyh the lack of results.

I'm using the same Hypertech programmer on my 3rd LT1/4 vehicle now... I originally bought it to use on a 97 Trans AM LT1/M6, it was later used on my previous Vette (96 LT1/A4), and now it's being used on my 96 LT4/M6...
Each time I plugged it into a new vehicle it recognized what it was programming and displayed the vehicle year and type on the display...
I don't use the power programming, only the fan temps... I originally bought it and the power scan cartrige for data logging and SES code scanning/clearing... So I can't comment on the engine tuning on the LT4... I know that it didn't do anything in my previous LT1 cars...
The programmer used is the same as mine, #365652. And as I stated before mine has a label on it that says it's for a "96 Corvette 5.7L LT4 Manual Only"
My programmer came with my GS. Using the programmer, I re-installed the factory programming as I didn't want to chance it voiding the GS factory warranty. Since I'm not using it, I thought I might sell it.
Using Hypertechs dyno chart above, the HP & TQ gains are slight at best.
As others have said here, it seems the most common use is for setting cooling fan "on/off" settings, rev limiter, etc.
I installed headers and cats on to my Corsa exhaust and also installed O2 sims after the cats. the mileage seems to have suffered. The instant MPG used to be 30-33 and now its only 24-28. Someone suggested I may need heated O2 sensors. I would be able to find out if I used the scan tool to see if the system was in a "closed loop". Does anyone have any more ideas about this?
Re: Need to buy a HyperTech programmer... (96CollectorLT4)
One note about this whole thread...
The Hypertech "program" is only effective on STOCK cars...if you've modded your car the programming changes won't be as effective.
Simple things like cut air lids and free flowing exhaust are changes and you won't see the improvements a stock car may.
Otherwise, if you have modded your car, you can strap your car on to a dyno and use the Hypertech to re-program your car to take advantage of your mods...but you need to know what you are doing!
The set "program" built in to the unit assumes stock...once you violate that rule, then the promises no longer apply....

Hmm, what the HPIII allows you to reprogram seems very limited to me. However, don't take my word for it. I've converted my Hypertech manual to a PDF file and if any CF member interested would like, I can email you a copy and you can see for yourself.
