Anyone out there have any experience with Kuhmo tires. Im looking at
their prices from the Tire Rack and they are pretty cheap. $110 a piece
for the Supra 712 and $149 for the Ecsta MX. Those prices are hard to
beat Im just wondering about the quality. I remember what my dad
always told me. "Son ya get what ya pay for".
The 712's are extremely good tires for the money. The MX's are supposed to be even better. They also list a new tire, priced in between, which is supposed to have much longer treadlife. You'd have to give up a little traction but if they last 4 times as long the tradeoff might be worth it.
I used up my rear Kumho MX's in about 8k miles, they were not that sticky either. I figured from what I had read about them they would be awesome in the grip department, but in reality were not much better than the Dunlop SP8000 they replaced, which were horrible in the traction department as well. The strange thing is they were never taken to the strip or obviously abused (no brake stands or smokey burnouts).
I'm going for 315's in the rear now in search for more grip. I'll probably give the BFG G-Force a try.
I had Kunho 712s on my 85, had about 15K on them, probably had another 5K on them. And I'm not easy on tires. Really good value, pretty good grip dry, excellent in the rain. If you can get them in sizes that you can rotate front to back really helps with the wear.
I would have gotten them again for my 94, but TireRack didn't happen to have 315/35/17s for my rear.
I have had Kumho Ecsta 712's on my 92 A4 for about 2 years now. I drive year round in New England - rain, snow, and heat of summer. They're not great in snow, but they hold great in rain and pretty well when dry. Last month I got a 60' time of under 1.90' at the track with a stock LT1 engine and a stock torque convertor. I rotate them front to rear every 7500 miles or so to balance out the wear. So far I have about 30,000 miles on them, and they'll last me until the fall. Did I say that I'm happy with them? I am! :D
I have the 712's on my '87. Much better than the Goodyears I took off. I've ordered several sets of tires from The Tire Rack and always had good service.
I put the Ecsta MX's on mine about a month after I got my car. I've had them on for over a year and put 25000 miles on them. They've still got a decent amount of tread on them so they are definitely a good tire for $149.

Re: Kuhmo tires (Biggie)
I have had the MX's on mine for about 1600 miles, and have no complaints.
They seem to have as much dry grip as the Goodyear F1's they replaced.
I only drive on the street, though, and it would take some timed laps on a track to give a definitive answer.
Your Dad was correct, you do get what you pay for, but its not always linear. In this case, you pay about 50% of the price of the top line French or Italian tire, but get about 80% of their performance. You DO give up some 'braggin' rights', however...

Edit: 94RAG is right, they WIll flatspot overnight and it takes about 10 minutes of driving to smooth 'em out. Other than that......
I've had my MX's one for over a year, they are way quieter and smoother than the new Goodyear F-1's the car came with, and stick much better. Went to a track day a couple of weeks ago, and all warmed up they are incredibly sticky. The F-1's evaporated off the back in about 10K mi., and I never turn off the ASR. To be honest, I've never been impressed with Goodyear products on any car I've ever owned. MX's will flat spot sitting in your garage and need a couple of miles to quiet down. I may try Firestones next, but only out of curiosity. I would buy these again

Re: Kuhmo tires (94RAG)
I have the MXs and love the handling and ride. They do break loose straight ahead at times even with the traction control on but I think that's due to the mods rather than any lack in the tire. If I really need forward bite I have drag radials for that! :D

my 712s flatspot just sitting in different weather and need a few miles in order to smoothen out. Is there a cure for this like changing the tire pressues?

I had this problem with my old tires, but not the Kumhos. How old are they? I'd guess its caused by a defective tire, maybe the plies are seperating or something. Notice any unevenness in the sidewall?
If you get more than 25k out of your Kumho's, you're not driving hard enough. :D :steering:

Re: Kuhmo tires (CentralCoaster)
I have the Kumhos 712s now and am happy with em for the price, but next time around I'll consider Kumho MX or Firehawks. Tires are an essential part of the car's handling.. so I don't mind spending the extra $.
Thanks for the responses guys I think Ill give the Kuhmos a shot when
I replace the tires. I had a set of Firestone Firehawk SZ50s on my Z28
and loved them but I dont see em listed anymore.

My 712's will flat spot when the weather turns cold in the fall. During the summer, I don't notice it at all.

Mine do this, too. Even more noticeable since I changed from 255s to 285s up front.
