I tried last week to go with 89 octane. I don't know if I got a bad tank of gas or what, but it was stumbling something fierce once the Vette got hot. Went back to 93 octane. It dropped in price this week, $2.13 down from $2.18.
DUDE!! Do yourself a favor, stay with the high octane 93. I also have found that for some reason my 86 pings like a bastard only if I put exxon in her so thats a no no in this house. Must be something in thier formulation. Now Mobil super gives me no problems whatsoever and Exxon&Mobil are a merged company...so I guess the gas is different.
Just out of curiousity has anyone else had a simillar problem with Exxon
and Pinging or for that matter any other brand gas?? Keep motorin' :steering: :seeya
I read somewhere (think My owners book) that the ZR-1 has a feature that you could use any octain and the computer adjusts the motor to run with whatever without engine damage. This was a standart part of the LT5 package because the ZR-1 was designed to be an "International Car" and octain ratings vary greatly from country to country.
I asked Cadillac about that and why that is not included as part of the Northstar package with no intelligent response! I do mix high and mid rated octain in our Northstar with no problems. It'll not run on 87 octain without pinging. Both the Cad and ZR-1 get fewer MPG and loose power with lower octain gases. Go figure why the General could make it work on the ZR-1 thirteen years ago and not have it as a standard in current models.
Since I fall in the early L98 category, and gas prices going through the proverbial roof, I'm gonna try mid-grade 89. And I have/was putting in the 94, so we'll see. I may try 87 if no knocking occurs with the 89. :seeya
We also don't normally see 92-93 octane in WA state either unless it's from a Racing Gas or Aviation gas source. We have 91-89 and 87 at most pumps. My 'old '70 LT-1 really moved (13.89 quarter...stock) with AV gas but that's a whole 'nother generation and story!
91 is the best we can get around here. My sport bikes require it too... filled the VFR with Chevron yesterday for $2.49. Freakin $8.08 to fill my bike is crazy!! At least it gets great mileage. ;)
I use Sunoco ultra 94. Going to fill up today. My daily driver ( ford E-250) Costs me $50 to fill up with regular and I use 2 tanks a week. So filling the vette up every couple of weeks with premium doesn't bother me.BTW, Someone posted that Sunoco was dropping the ultra 94 to 93. My local station still says 94 on the pump,am I getting ripped?
