Hi everyone
Hope all you nice folks in the forum can offer some suggestions. I took my 1989 vette out to cape cod for a service call on friday and everything was fine all the way down and back, about 85 miles each way,I also filled up the gas tank when i was on the cape. When i took the vette back out about 1 hour later to drive my son to little league I noticed idle wasn't right,it felt like it was going to stall. After the game the vette would start and then stall, had to keep my feet on the brake and gas pedal to keep from stalling and also it was backfiring. Today I filled it with fresh gas and drove for about 1 hour on the highway, while driving I noticed the Instant MPG stayed at zero and range indicator also did not seem to change, stayed at 640 miles. (1989 L98 engine 36K miles) Please help me with any ideas, Thanks in advance
Just a shot in the dark here but, try disconnecting your MAF sensor and see if it will idle. If it does idle, then it could be either the MAF or the relays.
You can swap the relays and see if it cures the problem. The relays are behind the battery. One is the MAF relay and the other is the burn-off relay. Chances are that they will not go at the same time so if you swap them and it fixes it, you will have to figure out which is which.
Grump- MAF is inline with the intake tube....from the air filter travel back until you see the round unit in the middle of the tube right before the Throttle Body.Plug is on the bottom.
Be gentle with it it has a filament like a light bulb inside.
Good Luck!
Sorry Gump, the "MAF" is the Mass Airflow Sensor. You may want to pick-up a chiltons or helms manual also. They can be an invaluable resource of infromation. Of course the guys here on the CF are pretty good too.
