Doug Nash 4+3 Transmission available from 84-88. It is a Borg Warner Super T-10 4-speed manual transmission with 2.88 1st gear mated to a 2-speed overdrive unit. O/D can be engaged in 2nd/3rd/4th gear giving you 7 total gears.
It's a four speed transmission with a selectable overdrive. Starting in 85, the switch was in the top of the gearshift lever. The overdrive was either on or off.
If it is on, you would start off in normal 1st gear, then in 2nd, 3rd and fourth, it would be in overdrive. Gives you four speeds with a higher ratio than normal. This would give you maximum economy.
Myself, I start off in 1st gear with the overdrive off, once I'm in 4th gear, I clutch again, hit the OD button and I get the overdrive/fifth gear.
To gear down coming into an off ramp for instance, clutch, hit the button, it goes to 4th gear without the OD.
If I'm going to pass while in OD, and I haven't shifted out of OD, when the throttle gets around 60% open, the trans will kick out of OD and back to the conventional 4th gear, then go back to OD when I let off on the throttle.
I don't think too many people go in and out of OD in each gear to get 7 speeds .....
It's a perfectly good transmission if not abused and the oil and filter in it is changed every so often .... hope that helps!!!
It means you'll have overdrive problems in the future - and that future hasn't happened to me yet!! :p: :jester :seeya Oh yeah, my early 85 has the OD switch on the console!!
