Default Oil Leak

I have an oil leak on the front end or my 92 vette. And I think it is coming from the gear that comes out of the distributor connecting to the internal gear inside the timing cover. Is there enought oil to get that far up the front end of the the timing compartment to actually push oil through that gasket. And if so what do you recommend me doing other than replacing that gasket. Also when installing the gasket are there any other proceedure you recommend.

This is a pretty common area to leak on an LT1. There are 3 seals in the timing cover -- distributor gear, water pump drive, and front crank seal. The distributor seal needs to be changed if it is leaking -- no other way to fix it. You do not have to remove the timing cover, though, in order to replace it. You can pry out the old seal with a small flat blade screw driver. A new seal (only available from GM) will run about $15. The trick is getting it back on, as the seal has an inner rubber seal that must not be allowed to "fold" out toward the front of the car, which it will do if you just force it on. The way to do it right is to use a cone-shaped cylinder to place over the distributor gear, which will allow the seal to slide in without folding the inner rubber outward. Try a search on past posts regarding front timing cover gasket repairs -- there are several innovative ways to install this seal.
