Your going to get my opinions on this. I say absolutely. Once you understand how it operates and its MINOR quirks, the system works flawlessly. See my sig

When I canged my wheels I took mine off with the stock tires just because I did not want to pay the money to have all the tires broken down, sensores installed and tires rebalanced. I keep a tire gauge in my vette and check the tires regularly so I would not pay extra for it, but it is just an option and if you think you would like that, then go for it. They do work though.

I can only go with an experience from last year to say YES I had just taken my 'Vette on its first run in the spring after being in storage and the LTPW came on. I checked the pressure and my right front, although looking ok was @ 26PSI. Saved precious tread on my Goodyear GSC's.

'89 was the first year and the biggest problem was the receiver. It's not shielded very well and will pick up electrical noise from any source (including a junker with crappy plug wires idling next to you at a stop light) lighting up the idiot light. The receiver was redesigned and is no longer made and GM stop producing it 2 years later. Used is available but the wreckers don't even guarantee them for 30 days. '90 and up are much better, but replacement parts are expensive with the wheel senders listing for about 150 bucks each. Is it worth it? The one time I had a nail in a tire it worked. None of them will do much for a blowout; nor will they tell you if the pressure is low until the vehicle is moving at least 25mph. However, if NHTSA has it's way (following the Explorer/Firestone debacle), they will be mandatory equipment on all new vehicles regardless of the drawbacks - and that may bring the price down if you're buying a new car.

This system is notorious for its bugs. I have it in my '92, and I often get the "Service LTPWS" light. Normally it happens after driving for 15 to 30 minutes. I've pulled the error codes, and I get codes for all four of the wheel sensors. I know all of them aren't bad. Nobody knows what the problem might be, so I just live with the light when it comes on. I'm thinking of just leaving the sensors off and removing the service bulb when I get new tires. Otherwise, the system does work when a tire gets low.

Maybe its just me, but I like to have all the options the car came with working :skep: I have a bad sensor but haven't gotten it replaced yet (When I can afford the new tires I will). Its nice to have and I like it but I wouldn't bother putting it on if I didn't have it. I've managed without it on all my other cars :D

For an '89, I don't know of any way to fix the bugs. Make sure the bulbs are secure in the Driver Information panel and that the wiring to the receiver is secure. Of course you have to take the dash apart to access all of this. There are no trouble codes for the '89 as the receiver does not interface with the ECM. It's a stand alone with it's power supply spliced into the VATS Module. Shop Manual procedure for testing the wheel sensors is to raise the car and then take an air hammer to the bottom of the tire (valve stem should face forward - sensor is opposite the valve stem). If the idiot light turns on while hitting it with the hammer, the Manual says the sensor is bad.

Yeah, I feel the same way I want everything working correctly, but for now the light is always on and it's just annoying. :chevy

'89 was the first year
The wierd thing is that it was announced for '87 and never came to happen. I say its wierd because my '87 has 2 lights for it in the idiot panel. LOW TIRE PRESSURE and TIRE PRESSURE SYSTEM FAILURE (close to that). I guess GM had already had the parts manufactured before deciding to can it. Just like the '90 non-ZR1s having the FULL ENGINE POWER light. :D
