Ok, a few months before I bought my 86 I was 5 minutes off of buying a 68 Corvette, 454 non-matching numbers. ~1.5k ,miles, M-21, just the works for about 10-12k (Yes it is a steal, though a long trip to get there from where I live but still a steal)
Well this car may be coming up for sale.
However I would have the sell off my 86, the 383 (after it is fully finished rebuilding), all my LPE headers/y-pipe, intake, all that stuff. And it would probably get me somewhere close to what I need.
So, I love the handling of the C4, however a chrome bumper shark with over 500hp with a fresh black paintjob...I don't know if I can pass it up... What Would C4 Gen do?

Re: WW C4 General Do???? (USAsOnlyWay)
Been there. I sold an 86 to help buy a house. About a year later I saw an 81 convertible in the local paper and had to have it. I spent a ton of money on it and finally realized I was trying to give it the power, handling, and convenience of my 86! I succeded in getting more than enough power with an engine rebuild and Edlebrock hop ups but it just was not as nice to drive as a C4. I sold the 81 and then about a year later bought my 87 vert. I still want more power, but the fun is back in the drive! My advice is that the 68 would be a fun play toy but it will never be a C4 without a ton of money thrown at it. I have driven 68's. The steering wheel is huge, the seat back angle sucks and you feel every pavement strip in you heinie. They do look mean, and the big block would be a blast though!
I would be tempted by the C3 too, but I would be looking hard at fuel economy and driveability too. Will it be your only form of transportation? or do you have another set of wheels. If I had to have a daily driver I would stick with the C4,but if you want a an awesome looking and sounding ride go with the C3
This is one of those events that you alone have to decide on. Personally, I love the look and drivability of the C4. I also like the look of the 68, but I would bet that the 68 will bring it's bag of problems with it. I don't think you'll recoup the money you put in the C4. Have you put the 68 up on a lift and really looked it over, yet? Good luck with your decission.
If you are considering selling the C4 to get the 68, you will probably find that the built 68 will cost a tremendous amount of money to operate. My first Vette was a bone stock 1970 with a LS5 390HP 454 and 4-speed and 3.07 gears. On a good day I got around 9mpg in town and 14 on the freeway. But that was in the days when gas was all of $.40 per gallon for 102-octane Chevron Super Premium fuel.
Sharks are a really beautiful car and easy to work on compared to the C4's but you lose a lot in ride quality, storage space (think C4 Vert!!) and the modded motor won't help much in driveability. But, I grew up with Vettes that were loud, rode like tanks, and in general, ruled the streets. I always used to say that if you can't get it sideways in 2nd, it's not worth driving.
If you can find a way to keep your 86, use the 68 as a fun weekend ride. It will be something to drive that will make mini-van drivers jealous, cause young wome to ask for rides and have mothers grab their childen and run and hide.

I've owned 4 C3s, a 70, 71, 75, and 79. I still own the 71 and I just bought my first C4, a 92. They are all different cars. I bought the 92 because I wanted a vette that I could drive every day. It depends on what you want and how you will use the car. Also, C3s vary greatly depending on year and options. My 79 was a great daily driver with most the comforts of a C4, but my 71 was made for the track not rush hour commutes. It's up to you but I like having one of each.
Well I am going up to look at it today, wish me luck. Obviously if it looks like a can of worms (after all the vettes I have test driven I better know one when I see one) I will definitly walk away. I am not paying over on this. However, you guys know what it is like to look at a bright shiny vette. I am not bringing the money in any shape way or form. So I should be safe from buying today and will force myself to think about it over the work week.
I think the 69 Chevelle with a 468 M-21 that I rode in last week is really having a huge impact...

Well i`ve got both. A `76 & a `87, both coupes. The `76 is a neat car, but the `87 is more fun to drive & I actually get something called "gas milage". If I drive the shark to work, ( 80mi. round trip ) its half a tank each way. With the `87, I can go to work & back about three days before I have to put gas in it. I just got the `87, & I told the wife that its an economy car

Re: WW C4 General Do???? (USAsOnlyWay)
My cousins have owned C3's (well ok sorry, I mean there's a vette from every stable chevy has put out in my kin's hands over the years)...
A few of my Buddies have em too...
The skinny is... The later the vette the better the vette.
My cousin's hubby Rich says he'll never own another C3... not because it can't go quick (his old 454 vette coupe did rock)... but it didn't take corners as hard and the gas guzzler it was didn't let him get very far down the road, and chevy didn't care enough about them anymore to keep a parts line open for the things that happen and need to be replaced. He was so piiiiissssssed that he bought a AC cobra 427 and now swears by ford (and his little roadster is an awsome ride when driven hard).
I like the lines of all vettes myself. They each possess the looks of power and American engineering. But ever since the clamshell came out I was hooked on the look (I'd made tilt front ends one of my marks for six of my personal cars and more than a dozen customers from out of the garage over the thirty years I've been driving and building cars)... And when they put some real muscle under the hood (ya'll with the ZR's are whom I am speaking of) I can't think of a reason to have anything else under my rear.
Yes you can rod up the older vettes... but the C4's are a superior performing chassis to any of the previous models...
If you want something for show... well the C3's are a sexy looking car... and if it's a look you're after, then no matter what my opinion is, you will get the one that gives you the woody.
But if you're looking for comfort, reliability, and real road/track crossover in a streetable ride...
C3s are very nice, my dad has a chrome bumper'd one, but after spending all that time and money into your '86, are you just ready to throw it all away for someone else's creation? It's up to you, but I would keep the '86.
