Well, picked up a distributor tool for the 87/L98, she's running fine but wanted to adjust the timing from 6 BTC to 7 BTC .... anyway, with the tool i can't get movement ... seems like the foot is way to long and the metal tube from the maniforld is in the way... is there a special distributor wrench that i should be using... thnaks guys , vinnie
I thought by "distributor tool" you meant the distributor wrench.
Yes, there is a special wrench that is offset; looks like a long "L". The "9/16" nut/bolt end is the short end. I bought one at a local swap meet a while back; invaluable in my opinion.
You can pick one up at any tool or auto parts store.
I have one of those tools from Sears and it indeed works, though I only get 1/12 rotation at a time.
I need to angle the tool slightly while pressing it toward the weather strip on the firewall. Then there's just enough room to rotate it 1/12 turn before it hits the vent tube comming up from the intake base.
I only use it to break the bolt loose, enough to rotate the distributor. To remove distributor, I reach in and unscrew the bolt by hand, after everything cools down.
Its one of those tools that when you need it, you need it; otherwise, it just sits in your toolbox.
