When I bought my '89, the owner said the HVAC didn't work. The buttons on the HVAC control simply do nothing, and it seems to get one LED on, but nothing on the actual display.
Since the stereo had been stolen, I figured the thief cut a wire or something. I just took the head unit out and looked at the wiring harness, and I don't see any cut wires (just tons of cut wires from the radio wiring harness.) I also don't see where a fuse might be missing or out. I replaced fuses (the radio and ctsy/clock were both missing, I replaced them and nothing mattered.)
Was there ever a problem with the HVAC controls going out, or is this common? Can anyone think of a fix, other than just getting a new HVAC control unit?
The vent is stuck in the open/hot position, so engine heat enters the car once the car is warm.
Ignition power is from the Gages fuse - make sure the Pink/Black wire has battery voltage with the ignition on. Courtesy/Clock fuse is memory and there should be battery voltage on the orange wire at all times. Grounds (black) run to the driver's side footwell - make sure they're intact. Radio does send a digital dim signal to the a/c panel controlling illumination - gray/white wire. Basically, it's to dim the a/c control panel lights when the headlights are turned on. You might try putting battery voltage on this wire - assuming all the other circuits are good, to see if the panel will light up. However, a good display should light up as long as there's battery voltage on the power - pink/black wire - and good grounds.
Having trouble getting the circuit tester light to come on with anything. Part of the problem is that the wires go into the wiring harness, and there's really no way of clamping to the black ground.
I see the pink/black wire, and I see the orange wire. I even see the black ground wire, but I can't touch it with the ground clamp on my tester.
Also, I see the grey/white wire coming from where the stereo used to be. It has been clipped. I don't know where it should go, unless the other side of it is hiding in that HVAC harness, and I didn't see it.
The radio wires are just a total mess, and I have to figure out which ones are speaker wires, and which ones are important wires.
