I believe it started in 1993.

It was in fact, introduced on the 1993 models. To retrofit the factory PKE would be a long, ardous task due to the rear and door antennas and wiring, plus the receiver installation and a few other things I can't think of right now. If you desire such a feature, there are aftermarket units that are available.
