My friend with the vert said the Chevy dealer mechanic told him that normal operating temp is 240 and that if he didn't believe him he could go see him and he'd show him the book. He shoulda gone to look at the book, I'd say!
My 86' coupe came with a 160 degree Thermostat, and if it is moving above 40MPH, even in muggy 90 degree weather, it will still pull the coolant temp down to the low 180's(on the highway it will pull it down even more). I just got the car, and I haven't had a chance to clean the radiator, so I think a lower T-stat might be a good start.
The thermostat opens at 195 F and the Fan Motor Switch Point is at 223 F. My 87 Convertible normally runs 200 - 205 Farenheit and while sitting in traffic for a few minutes runs up to around 230 F at most. These readings are for a hot summer day and fluctuate 10 - 15 degrees downward on a cool summer day or in Spring and Fall.
