Default Sig Pics

OK guys, with the new software, we lost the automatic resizing of pics. EVen with the old software the guidelines for sigs was less than 450 pixels wide total.(not each pic, but all combined).

If you notice an "edited by Mr Mojo" in your post, it's probably because I unchecked the box for your sig.

This was the reason Troy toyed with the idea of removing sig pics altogether, too many people had(and have) huge sig pics.

With the old software this would cause slow loading for dial up users and I'm no computer expert, but I was told it used excessive bandwidth and it was also causing problems for high speed users.

Even though the pic was "small" in the post, in reality it was still large behind the scenes and people with large(byte) pics were slowing the forum down.

This is also why Troy allowed everyone to have a custom avatar, to help cut down on sig pics and give everyone a chance to personalize their posts without having to include their sigs.

You will notice how often I attach my sig, usually only when I create a post and only in the first reply.

I'm starting this here and will move on to other sections. We have a broad group of owners here so you can spread the word if you see someone with a very large sig pic.

If you have a large sig pic, please reduce it.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

You guys don't have to turn them off, just reduce the size, that's all, and post only once per thread.

Well sigs are now limited to 400 characters. Your current sig will stay, but if you try to edit it, it will only let you keep 400 characters.

MOJO, how do I access my CF home page, more specifically the picture file manager. I want to replace pictures in the file with new ones that will be <450 pixels to comply with the siginature requirements. With the old system I could edit my CF home page thru the user services tab but now can't find any way to make these changes. Tks, Bill

Well I changed my sig pic, but that of course meant I had to edit my sig and I lost everything else I don't think 400 characters is enough Especially if you have to link things. To make a pic you need "img http://mysite.somewhere.com/somefolder/thepicture.jpg /img" or to make a link look nice you need "url=http://awholelotmorestuff.com/coolink.html]nicewriting /url"...that's a whole lot of characters for a few words and a pic in your sig

I will agree with the 400 character limit, but I think in the long run it will be better. Some forums only allow 200.

Back when Troy offered the free homepages(which are not available anymore) he did it so people could have long signatures by clicking the link to the home page, but instead everyone started using the home pages as a file locker to link everything and that is why they were shut down.

Back when Blake was around he made a request that nobody put sig pics, but rather a link to a pic. That lasted about two weeks. At that time the forum was only 3000 members strong and so many new members were coming everyday he couldn't keep up. He even offered to host the pics, but people just went ahead and did their own thing and there were too many people to police and it just got out of control.

This is another reason Troy thought about eliminating images in sigs and giving everyone a custom avatar instead.

This switch to the new software is just the first step and we are still in the orientation phase where everyone is getting used to it. After a while when things settle down, I'm sure he'll discuss the future of sigs and pics.
