I payed 11.5k for my `87 coupe with 33902 original miles on it, & I thought it was worth every penny. ( of course after I bought it, Ron at Contemporary Corvette in Bristol Pa. comes up with a 96CE coupe with 55k original on it for 12k . Its still there as far as I know)
I bought this corvette for $8500 with only 38,000 miles on it and I absolutely love it. It is beautiful condition. I hardly done anything to it other than clean it up and drive it. My point is, you can find some great deals if you look around. Like yourself, I could not afford to spend $15,000 on a newer vette right now. There is no question, if you can spend around $15,000 you can find a much newer vette with significant upgrades but if you are just looking to have a nice corvette, then look around, you will find one. I did and now I am happier then I have ever been. Achieved my dream of owning a really nice corvette. Good luck.
I purchased a 1987 Monte Carlo SS. It had t-tops a 355 and 150 shot nitrous. The engine was rebuilt and only had 10K when I purchased it. I only paid 2K for it. The body had some rust. My friend owns a body shop. I fixed the rust and repainted it for $1,000.
I recently traded my Monte Carlo for a 1987 C4 coupe. Cosmetically the car is a 8/10. Interior 7/10. Mechanically it needed some work.
Headlight motors needed to be rebuilt. Bought a kit and did it myself.
Cracked windshield replaced myself. Cracked glass top. Found a good used one at Bloomington Gold $250. Sold my cracked one for $150. However I did blow my head gasket. I found someone on this very forum to help me out. Will cost me less than of what a mechanic would charge.
So basically I got a pretty good 1987 C4 for 4K. I was frustrated at first. But after some time and guidance from the forum members. I've been up and running and haven't looked back.
Take your time network with forum members. Check for Corvette clubs in your area. You may find that diamond in the ruff. Like many of us did. I've seen running c4's posted on the forum for less than 5K with very few problems. Just be patient!!! :flag
how 'bout spending 2 grand more and you can have a c4 with a lingenfelter 383 engine, admiral blue paint, black leather and a whole lot more. the car i refer to is my own. see the c4 for sale section.
or e-mail/im me if you'd like details. you're close enough to drive it back to maine also. it's a proven 11 second daily driver also if you we're interested in that!
If I were you I'd buy Jay's car, RIGHT NOW! If that's not feasable, why not face the facts. Yarmouth If you want a nice Vette for a good price you're going to have to go to where there's a population base that will support lower prices and cars don't rot out from salt after 5 years. Period!
I'm from the NE and you need to fly somewhwere and drive you're beatuful new vette home. If I didn't have one I'm burried in I would fly to Jay and buy his
I just got my 94 with 68000 for 13000. When I took it to the Chevy dealer to have a couple of minor issues fixed he told me it was absolutely the cleanest, best shape 94 he's seen in 6 or 7 years. Made my day. Your car is out there.....you just have to find it.
I just bought my 1984 for $7,500.00 and it had 30,000 miles on it and is in excellent condition. I couldnt believe the lows miles and felt I couldnt really go wrong with it, especially since I knew the guy that owned it for the last 10 years and that it was covered and garaged at all times and never saw wet pavement since he'd had it.....
...
and I don't want one with like 100k miles on it. ...
I think that the milage thing is where you are causing yourself a lot more greif that you need. I bought mine with 149K and didn't have the slightest problem for over a year. Now, 3 years after buying it I think I have a grand total of $300.00 in repair costs invested in it. (NO, I am not counting perfectly good parts I pulled off for Mods.... That total would be higher. )
At about 160K (I'm at 164 now) the valve seals started to drip a little so there there is a little puff of smoke at start-up. I got a quote for under $250.00 for a local shop, and I am planning on doing that in the next month or so. Even then, that will put my total bill for 3 years of repairs at less than one monthly payment on a new C6.
Sure, go ahead a buy a real cheap car. then get out your Mid-Amer catalog and start adding up the fixes to make it reliable and a decent driver. How much does a set of plugs cost, what about injectors, a new opti-spark, tires, wheels, exhaust, etc.? And, if you don't do everything yourself, add $50 hour for labor at least. No, I spent 17.0 for my 96 with 38K and I have only put in a new air filter, oil, filter, and a door switch I have the ease of mind to drive my Vette on a 1500 mile trip or just admire it in the driveway. I bought my black/black LT4 w/ 92k on it for 9800.00 last August. The chrome sawbades were junk but the tires were good, it needs paint on the nose and mirrors ( I use masks, and they look great on black ) the interior was undamaged but fithy. It was missing little things like the clutch pedal pad, ashtray, etc. The a/c worked but only blew thru defrost and floor vents. Drivers window didn't work. But, the car had newer tires and brakes, didn't leak, didn't have cooling or oiling problems, clutch was good and it ran like a scorched cat all the way to redline. After spending hours detailing the interior, paint, and engine compartment, I replaced the wheels with ZR1's, replaced the a/c vaccum controler, pulled the window motor and cleaned it, replaced all the small missing parts, replaced the missing spare and carrier. I also added a few interior items, mats, leather arm rest, etc. I also installed a new front spoiler, outside window seals and hatch weatherstrip. The paint on the nose and mirrors still needs to be done, but the masks look great so I haven't done it. I've eliminated virtually all squeaks and rattles, although it didn't have many. I have two small rock chips in the windshield that are going to be repaired this week. I cruised the 'net and found the best deals I could on wheels and parts and did the work myself. Bottom line is I have a great looking and fast 'Vette for a tick over 12k including taxes.
I've never been afraid of higher mileage cars as long as they're well maintained. The deals are out there, you just have to do some hunting and be willing to do some work. Good luck!!
