Hey guys my wife got a flat tire right up the street from the house. It wasn't driven on. It's a Dunlop SP Sport 8000 P275/40ZR17. The leak is right in the center of the tread. I wanted an inside patch. I was told your not suppose to patch a "Z" rated tire. Anyone ever hear of this? Also the center cover is original (91) and brittle. Any tips on removal?
Thanks. Billy D.....

I got my right rear patched on the inside from a nail puncture at NTB. I have since driven 140 for a short period of time with no issues. 80 to 90 for an extended period with no issues either.
You can patch and/or plug a 'Z' rated tire. However, most places advise against it. Years ago I had two nails in a set of 'Z' rated tires. The tires still had plenty of life left in them, so I had them plugged, against the advice of the shop that did it for me ... didn't have any problems and replaced the tires a couple of years later. The reason I was given for not wanting to plug/patch them is that once you do they technically lose their rating. Makes sense, once damaged in any way, you've degraded the integrity of the tire and, if driving at excessive speeds, the tire could fail. So if you plan on keeping it under 140 or so, it shouldn't be a problem
