An x-pipe is designed to help with the exhaust scavenging effect by equalizing pressure on both sides of the exhaust system. Typically a resonator is just a fancy word for another muffler which can generally do nothing but hurt performance. An x-pipe will probably be louder than a car with a resonator but it will perform better.
The stock resonator and most others are just straight through pipes with a sound absorbing material around them. Looks like a muffler, but no real restriction.
I just had an x-pipe put on my car and I can feel a seat-o-the-pants difference all across the rpm range. Not a huge difference, but noticeable nonetheless.
im debating doing this as well but wonder if i should keep my resonator since i am getting headers soon and dont have much in the way of restriction. im not worried about volume. just resonance. i really dont have any to speak of right now
I've got Longtubes. 3"x-pipe, and 3" B&B's and I couldn't be happier w/ both the sound and the performance. I get compliments on it on the street and at the track all the time. Is it loud? Hell yes! But, it is definately worth it in more ways than one. BTW, Dr. Gas is the place to get the x-pipe, I put in the measurements from my stock resonator and I had the pipe shipped to me in a weeks time---->excellent turn around time.
