My car has the stock plastic rear window. It is still crystal clear. However, it has some scratches and now has a "dent" in it. I put the top down with some stuff in the back and oops. I am thinking it might stretch itself out, but if it doesn't I'd like to replace it.
I am wondering how much a replacement plastic window will be? Now I know most here will say to get the glass retrofit. I'd like to, but seems to costly for me right now. Has anyone replaced the plastic with plastic.
Anyone know of a good place in New England to get it done?
I've never heard of just replacing the plastic window. That doesn't mean some custom upholstery shop couldn't do it. I would think the top would have to come out anyway in order to fix the window. Replacement soft-tops can be found for under $200.00, of course your still stuck with installation cost.
You might be able to find someone that is willing to try to replace the plastic, but as far as going with glass, there is a kit you need to get from GM that will allow a glass window top to be installed.
Without the kit, the glass will break as you will not be able to properly fold it down. Notice the crease in your plastic?
you can't just replace the window unless ya go to a custom shop and even then most won't do it... just as cheap to go with a new top .. i just went through this in teh spring no one would touch resewing in a window .. besides they have to take the top off anyhow to replace the window..
This what I did to my 68 roadster.
I cut the old plastic out and left 1" border and then i went to hardware store and bought the plastic. Cut it to size and hot glued it in. Took maybe an hour and half.
I'm not sure how messed up your window is. I have a glass window in mine, but Mid America has a small "pillow" that lays between the window and top when the top is down. It is supposed to help protect the window when the top is down. May this will help for further damage.
Thanks for all the replies guys! I think it is going to be ok to keep for now. The top is beautiful.....so don't want to change it for a dimple in the plastic!!
I had the plastic window replaced on an IROC vert I had years back. It was done by an upholstry shop and I believe it cost me about $200 (although that was about 8 years ago). So the answer is yes it can be done by a decent shop.
is this just a dimple not a tear?? if its not torn and is just distorted.. set the car out inthe sun with the top up and tight it should work itself out... maybe even turn the heater on to heat up the inside till the sun really gets on it in a day or two it should be gone.. as long as the plastic is still pliable which it must be or it would have puntured it this should work out for you
