My 1989 L98 Conv has the stock 2.59's. What can I do about changing this to something higher? Like 3.73's or +

Your l98 is a low reving another over 3.54 is out of the question really. 3.07's fit the l98 rpm range the best IMO and most agree.

you could, but its inadvisable for the L98s short powerband

3.07 fits it perfectly, and switching to that from 2.59 isnt really worth the expense unless you also switched to D44.

Would there be a signifcant difference if I did decide to do it?
Im kinda in a rough spot, I was thinking of doing a Transmission swap from Auto to Manual. But I'm still trying to figure out if its worth it and how much total cost would be. I do plan on doing alot to the car. Anyway, if anyone has input I would greatly appreciate it.

Do you know roughly the cost to do something like this? And what I would need?

Sorry I'm a little outta wack... I'm all about the LS1 and LT1. Its pretty much the engine I know the most about. But when I decided to turn down the 99 Camaro SS and get the L98 I found I didn't know as much about it.

Sorry I don't know the cost and all really because my 95 came withteh 3.07s. I can tell you this after driving some other a4's mine was by far a lot more punchy and quicker.....didn't know why really but aftering I joined this forum I found out about gear options and I checked mine it had the g9g g44 option 3.07s.....and my friends with c4's all had the 2.59's.

So, I think it would be a good upgrade for ya!

Youre looking at ballpark $700 to do the gears.

I dont think its a worthwhile upgrade, an L98 wouldnt notice the difference as much.

I think your money would be better spent on a 2000-2200rpm Torque converter.

I think it depends on in what area of performance you want a gain in. For quicker ETs, I agree a higher stall TC might work better, and your mileage would not be affected.

However, the 2.56s in my LT1 (that I inherited) are the reason I don't drive it. It is just no fun, mostly because there is no response at anything less than 80 mph. The motor is always just chugging along at idle at any speed less than that, and it is just no fun when slowing for a corner, and having the engine chugging at 1000 rpm when exiting. The abrubt downshift just doesn't feel right. I know the L98 has different torque characteristics than the LT1, but I imaging the effect is similiar.

So if you are looking for a more subjectively responsive engine, what somebody earlier described as punchier, than the 3.07s might be the way to go.

3.45 was standard, but youll have to check your RPO's for codes starting with G, those tell you what rear.

No, do not upgrade the gears.
