I came out of a store tonight, and as I walked up on the back of the coupe I realized that I had left the parking lights on. No problem. It started right up and I drove to my next stop. At the next stop, I made sure that I fully pressed the light switch, but the tail lights (only) stayed on. The front marker lights were off. Wierd, but I'd figure it out after this stop. I thought I had probably collapsed a brake light switch, but when I stepped on the brake pedal my 3rd brake light operates normally, but the 4 tail lights didn't change.
Does anybody have any idea what's up? The car is a mongrel, it's been rebodied as a '93. I've never had any problem related to lighting (except for the dashboard) before. Right now I've got the battery disconnected and in the morning I'll pull a tail light lens and verify which filament is constanly on. HELP!!!
If the lower lights that are staying on are brake lights, then its probably the switch. The brake light switch has two sets of contacts. The first runs thru the hazard flasher and turn signal sw. to operate the lower brake lights. The second set of contacts operates the third brake light only.
Thanks for the tip. Now, just exactly where does Chevy hide the brake light switch? It's not on the master cylinder. Is it located under the dash on the brake pedal mount, or is it enmeshed with the ABS stuff? Where do I look for this thing?
Thanks for the advice! Getting to the pedal assembly require pulling the panel under the steering column, but I found the switch. I felt like a contortionist trying to stick my head under there, but changing it out wasn't as bad as I might have thought. $5.67 for the part and 20 minutes of labor and I've got working brake lights again.
