I love my Escort X50 ... it's one of the best detectors out there and cheaper than the valentine. I didn't want to pay extra $$$ for arrows since I am on the brakes regardless of direction.

You'll get as many opinions on radar detector as you would on what car wax to use, but the V1 is certainly up there at the top.
I agree, BUT, DON"T use the web site...PHONE THEM @ 1-800-331-3030 and ask them if they still sell "Vacation Rentals". That's their term for the units that are purchased and then returned in a short period of time under Valentine's no questions asked policy. The returns are totally checked, repackaged and can't be told from new. They include the same warranty, etc. ONLY DIFFERENCE IS YOU GET THEM FOR 10% LESS. If none are in stock when you call ask to be put on their waiting list for one when it comes available. Longest I've ever waited is about a week. I'm on my 4th unit; always end up selling it with the car. Several in our Vette club have Valentine unites purchased this way and they've been perfect!
I havent bought one yet but I'm leaning towards the Beltronics Vector 995. They are the same as the Bel RX65. Savinglots.com sells them for $229.95. I did some research at radarbusters.com, lots of good info. I dont have a speeding problem on the highways , But they sneak up on me in town.
I bought my Escort Solo S2 last year.
Escort sells it for $329, as does most other vendors.
I bought it off an Ebay vendor for $259 + $10 shipping, new in the box, warrenteed.
It works fine with no problems.
All i know is my radar detector has saved my *** a couple of times...just make sure and get a good one...Dont get the cheap ones because they don't work anywhere close to the nice ones.
That is an interesting article on radar detectors, thanks for the info.
I have used older model Cobras with success for years (i.e. no speeding tickets). None of these offer complete protection but a good one is a good counter measure in the arsenel against cops.
Just this morning my Cobra alerted me that a cop, whose attention I had gotten while passing a semi during a very slow left turn(lol), had pulled into a parking lot and had his radar gun aimed at me in a 30mph zone. Luckily I was waiting at a traffic signal, heard the Cobra's signal and "eased" away when the light went green.
I've thought of using a plastic license plate cover to absorb the Laser's IR signal; guess what, I'm betting that is exactly what Laserveil does. BTW, I clicked on the link to their site and it was dead!!
I agree, other than I have NO DOUBT it has paid for itself 10+ times over. Whatever brand you choose, it will be well worth the investment. The thing I like about V1 is that is tracks your back also, and just the other day this feature saved my butt, yet once again.

Valentine One. It's the best you can buy and it works great. They also hold their value very well if you ever decide to get rid of it. New ones cost about $400. I looked on eBay trying to get a deal and they had old ones selling in the $350 range. I ended up getting a brand new one and I have enjoyed it every day since.
I don't get into the V1 vs. 8500 debates because I know the V1 works, and my 8500 works. It usually comes down to arrows vs. no arrows. In that case, I'll agree with what somebody else says - "I didn't want to pay extra $$$ for arrows since I am on the brakes regardless of direction."
My now 5 year old Bel 980 gives me plenty of warning...around curves, over hills, miles on straights. Voice warning of radar type helps sort 'um out as Ka and X are predominant in the southern states. It's so good that I would not consider a Valentine until I see one and a Bel in a side-by-side test.
The Bel recently gave me about 4 miles of warning...and the trooper was backed up against an Interstate overpass concrete abutment shooting in the direction I was traveling. When it chirps, I believe and lift!!!
The plate cover may be a good idea to foil the blasted cameras. A lot of cities are adding them at traffic lights.
As to power, depends on where you want it. I like mine on the dash directly in front of me. It's real easy to wire into the accessory wire under the shifter plate and bring the wire out between the dash pad and the AC outlet. It's also very easy to tap into the hot wire for the rear view mirror, but placing the detector in that position blocks some forward vision....which Vettes are already short on.
