Default An observation...

Today I bought a K&N air filter for the '91 coupe. I was debating with myself about cutting the lid of the stock air cleaner when I decided to measure the square inches of the inlet to the TPI and compare it to the area of air intake in the stock lid. MY resutls were as follow: The total area of inlet in the stock lid is approx. 24 square inches. The total area of the intake to the TPI is 15 square inches. My conclusion is that there is no reason to cut the stock lid, because the restriction (if there is a restriction) is at the TPI inlet.
Has anyone come to the same conclusion? Has anyone actually been able to measure any improved air flow with a cut lid?

Yes, I got 5-7hp in 3 dyno runs from the K&N with cut lid.
(7 on one run, 5 on the other 2)
It does help the L98.

That's good to hear. I've had a K&N filter for about a year and been debating about cutting the lid; think I've just made up my mind

Getting 5 - 7 hp is great, but did you measure your gains with the K&N before you cut the lid? My concern is that I don't want to start cutting on this otherwise stock car for no reason.

The idea of these mods is to completely utilize the L98's intake, cutting the lid, removing the MAF screens....these things DO work. By that logic, i know the 52mm TB should help, but still doesnt on L98 because the 48mm flows more air at max than the engine can breathe.

Just increase the CFM all the way to the motor, and from the motor to the exhaust tips, and youll maximize the power it can make.
