Recently bought an 86 coupe. Engine compartment looks as if it had been "detailed" in past with one of those spray on glossy liquids that now has turned brown crusty looking.
Anyone have any recommendations of how to get this off engine parts, hoses, weatherstripping ??????

Oh don't you just love the work of shlock detailers? If the basic cleaning doesn't get it all, a good steam cleaning may be called for. Watch the critical areas and you'll be fine, just did my LT1s underhood for the umpteenth time last night which some cringe at the thought of!

I tied shopping bags around the MAFS, AIR PUMP, DISTRUBUTOR, and ALTERNATOR.
I emptied a whole bottle of Simple Green Automotive Degreaser all over the whole engine. Down in from of the wheel Wells, everything. Then hosed the whole thing off, then uncovered, let sit a while, then started it up.
It ran rough for a bit, but after a few runs, it was normal, and a whole lot cleaner.
I just finished cleaning my engine compartment, I used Knights Spray Nine Greeze-OFF. It worked very well and removed any old Armor-All or other treatments put on the engine. One word of caution, it seems to be pretty strong stuff, so use care around decals, engine compartment stickers etc. BTW it was extremely good cleaning the grime off the suspensions components. Good luck!

That sounds like something I've been looking for to get those A arms and stuff looking nicer since I'm too lazy to scrub them! Where can I get some?

Yeah; the dealer where I bought my `87 must have sprayed a 55 gal. drum of that crap under the hood,& on all the interior plastic pieces. Glad to see I`m not the only one.

I won't speak for all optis but mine is a later, vented one, new and the vacuum hoses are new and connected. I'm not concerned with water getting to it under normal circumstances. I don't cover it but nor do I spray water directly in that area. I have washed or steamed cleaned my engine many times with no problems.
