Default NEW headlight question

I just replaced the bushings in both my headlights. Used the ones from Home Depot at 43cents for a pack of two. Anyway when my headlights
reach full open OR full closed the motors do not shut off right away but
keep trying so the headlights go thump thump thump 3 to 8 times before the motors say ok and quit. According to the FSM the control module keeps tab of full open or full close so there are no micro-switches. It also seems like there is a "rock-over" point on the bellcrank arm and it does not always go over so the lights are not fully closed. Oh yeh, 1990 conv.

Did you mark the main gear with a permanent marker when you first opened it up?

I find that's a good thing to do so you have a common reference point after you install the new bushings, lube everything down with dialectric grease and are ready to seal everything back up.

Also, I hate to say it, but are you sure you installed all those flat metal shims? (washers)

Check to make sure you properly sealed the gear case. Any spaces or alignment issues? I can tell you firsthand if these motors aren't sealed precisely, your headlights won't open and close properly.

Thanks for the input. Actual problem turned out to be smashed bushings. The ones I bought at Home Depot have too thin a wall and get crushed! I modified them and they work good now though. I took pictures of the disassembly and also of the crushed and modified no-crush bushings. Will send via e-mail if anyone wants to see them.

The CORRECT Home Depot bushings are item no. 595609. They are exact fit and require NO modifications. I installed them in my '92 and both lights are operating normally.
