UPS overall does a good job of ontime delivery. This problem can occasionally happen, but if you want to talk about delays, errors, and damaged products then try the Post Office. They suck.
Therefore, the driver determines when and where packages will be delivered. In my case I ordered a part and specifically stated I wanted it left without a signature, the vendor agreed and so marked the package. The package was not delivered due to driver discretion, even when the vendor faxed an approval and I accepted responsibility.
So, I will not use UPS again. If I have to change vendors I to get a part I will.
BTW, there are over 95,000 complaints on the internet about poor delivery from UPS - all related to driver issues.
Your money your time, do what you think is right. I have made my decision.

I have had pretty good luck with ups. One day, I was out washing my car and the driver showed up with a package. I showed him the car and told him that I had the following day off and was expecting a vortex rammer. He usually comes in the evening, but made a special trip in the morning so I would have my rammer. I thought that was pretty cool.

Mojo? Seriously though, I've not had any major problems with them and they have a couple of stores close by so I use them almost exclusively. All companies are composed of humans and so make mistakes sometimes. It's how they handle it that separate the good from the bad.
You have to remember each situation is handled differently. If you have a good relationship with your driver(tip him well) you will get service above and beyond what the regulations call for.
Jeff in your situation, I'm going to guess that someone made a mistake and put it on the wrong trailer, but in rare cases, it may have been a different driver or different route and the guy didn't feel like delivering it. He can get in big trouble for this. UPS policy is every package everyday. No exceptions except acts of God.
mbehavin, where can I find that list?
Like I stated above, knowing your driver makes all teh difference.
For example, I deliver a small apartment complex(158 units) they are all outdoor entry and my boss specifically says, no packages are to be left without a signature. Well most of the tenants treat me well and it's usually the same people who get stuff, so I know who to leave it with if they aren't home and more importantly I know when certain people are home. In some cases, I will leave the package if requested, it all depends on what the package is. If it's in a VCR box or computer box, it will never be left without someone signing for it, even if there is something else in the box.
Lately we've been signing contracts with the USPS. They can't handle the volume, so they've hired us to deliver their packages and those we are allowed to leave anywhere, anytime.
So Jeff your situation doesn't appear to be driver error, but it is a UPS error and probably has a lame explanation as to why, but remember we handle over 15,000,000 packages a day(maybe more). SO there are bound to be a few mixups.
have you guys done any price comparisons between UPS & FedEx? FedEx is consistantly cheaper than UPS. I was going to have to ship a bumper cover to NY and UPS wanted like $120, FedEx $80. Sometimes it's only a difference of 2 or 3 bucks, but if you ship a lot of stuff it adds up quick.

and do you know why they are cheaper? I do. The drivers get paid a zone fee and per package. But they don't have to deliver a package if they don't want to.
Also they are trying to get business away from us(who wouldn't?) but once(if ever) they catch up, watch the rates escalate, same for DHL. DHL is losing money on every package they handle, but theu are taking a gamble and if it works out, that's great for them, if not, that's great for me.
Bottom line, there is plenty of business out there for every company and truthfully, I wouldn't mind losing some business just so I could relax more.

Hey! I work for the Postal Service ( tractor trailer driver ), & for the volume of mail e.g. letters, parcels, magazines etc. that gets mailed out every day, I think the 850,000 members of the USPS do a pretty damn good job of getting the mail where it has to be, & in a reasonable time frame, & in good condition. That is not to say that mistakes are not made, that happens in any business. As far as Fedex is concerned, you`ll notice that there are Fedex drop boxes outside most postal facilities, thats because we are now " partners " in shipping with Fedex. We ship each others packages. Ken
I would tend to agree with those who said get to know your driver. I know my UPS driver very well and she gives me great service. In our little town (2800 pop) she will run me down if she thinks I am waiting on the package. Or sometimes I see her and tell her that I am expecting a package and she will hunt me down so I get it. I should have added that everyone in the package/letter delivery business works hard and I am thankful for every one of them because its a job I couldn't handle, (wouldn't be able to, I don't have the patience) and where would we be without them?

UPS leaves the package on my deck all the time without a signature.
If they didn't I'd never get it.
Never had a problem with UPS.
I use UPS on a daily basis for the last year and a half. They only had problems with one package.95,000 complants is not bad compared to the millions of deliveries a day.

I have invariably had excellent service from the local UPS delivery guys.
My problems with UPs has always been with the beatings the packages take enroute. Yes, UPS has always paid for damages, but never without a long, drawn-out claims process that seemingly is designed to cause the claimant to just give up and disappear....
For that reason alone, I usually ask for FedEx if I have a choice.

Tip them? You guys are Teamsters, right? I know what you make! I'm not usually home during the day but one day I was when he came. He was very nice and wanted to make sure that where he was leaving the packages was okay, out of site but outside. He always puts them in a plastic bag in case of rain. Larger or real expensive things I just have sent to a friend's business. The only shipping containers I've had damaged was a box full of larger parts, poorly packed by the sender. It was damaged from the loose pieces moving around inside. I couldn't fault UPS for that.
