Default Help with Driver Side Window

Hello All

My 86 is not a daily driver but is driven to work on Fridays. While letting her warm up a bit this last Friday I rolled the drivers side window down and heard a strange click noise just before reaching bottom. As I started away from the house I tried to roll up the window and ... it only came up about 2-1/2 inches and started clicking. Needless to say I was upset and checked it out after work that afternoon.

After taking the interior door panel off and moving the window a little bit, I notice that the plastic or nylon track gear is broken. The pinion gear on the motor appears to be fine. I found the part number for an 84 -85 rack (10045642) but not the 86 in the parts manual. I contacted my local dealership and was informed that the rack is not available for the 86 (which I already determined). The complete "1986 regulator assembly" (22063225) is available for about $315.

Anyway, my question is, has anyone else expereinced this and what was the final result? Will an 84 -85 rack fit the regulator assembly or MUST I replace the entire assembly for a broken rack?

Thanks in advance,
Bob
P.S. Nothing shows up in a search for this.

check out eklers or one of the many other vendors for a ribbon.

Yes that is what the plastic thingie that breaks in power windows is called "A Ribbon" They should call it a medal. As in you get a medal for fixing it yourself!

Of course some guy from Mass. is in the public eye now saying back then ribbons and medals were interchangable /tease

If you do use eklers use source code ecksp0405. Site page number 27. Site part number a9210 $24.99 each or $39.98 for two.

I beliece the correct term for this ribbon is ferol? tape and they all break at some time.Your car is an early 86.You would be better off going to the later design, most likely thats the price you were qouted at $300+.Ive seen these regulators go for $250.The only problem is the new style is alot faster than the old style you have now.Yours can be repaired.Alot of people here have worked on these so there wont be any guess work on your part if decide to go with the new style.Ive updated both on my car.

Yes mine did the same. I updated my early 86 with new style also. I picked up both regulators on ebay for 150.00. Purchased the rubber window stops at GM dealer. Installed myself.

Do NOT replace with another ribbon! Like was stated previously, it is a royal pain to do any work at all on the regulator assembly. I replaced the ribbon on my 86 a few years ago. The replacement lasted a grand total of 4 days. I got the newer style regulator assembly for $210 from my local Chevrolet dealer. Now the window goes up and down twice as fast as it did before, and there's no ribbon to worry about breaking again.

I bought an '86 - '92 regulator and motor assembly from corvette central for my '84. It was only about $160 for everything. All it took was to drill a couple of holes for the new one and it fit right in.
Now the window rolls up and down real fast and smooth. I'm thinking of doing the passenger side now just to upgrade!! Very happy!!

I have a driver's side window regulator/motor assembly for sale in my eBay store for $100. I pulled it out of an '87. I tested the motor and it seems to work just fine. If you're interested here's the link

Its a common problem. They discontinued the ribbon style because they're junk. In fact, I threw away a good passenger side one cuz nobody wanted to pay shipping on it.

Here's a tip:

Thank you EVERYONE for your input and help

I cannot say it enough; this forum is the greatest and has the greatest people also.

vettebldr1, thank you for the offer of the regulator. I was telling my girlfriend this morning and she bought it from you and is having it shipped to me. It is a long story why she is doing this. She is such an I am looking forward to the delivery.

CentralCoaster, Thank you for the link to the instructions. I was planning on creating some instructions for anyone else needing help but you saved the day. By the way, I absolutely love your "Squirrel Fishing" section in the link that you posted. Next time I am in Morro Bay (2 hrs away) or wherever squirrels are I really need to try this. And as a side note, I will not try the recipes my red meat must consist of beef.

Once again to everyone a GREAT BIG THANK YOU and if I have forgot to thank anyone else, please forgive me.

Bob

I was out and about this afternoon, I just got back and saw the regulator had sold. First thing I did was come here to see if you had got it. Glad to see its going out to you! I will have it shipped out of here in no time!
