I do read the GM Manual, and I have had to pay to have enough transmissions rebuilt before to know that the 1-2 and 3-4 clutch packs are the first sets to wear out in the 700.
If you leave it in OD all the time, and it is constantly shifting back and forth between 3 and 4, you will lose your 700/4l60 before its time. Period.
You disagree, be my guest.
What GM means by 'normal' operation is a engineer's term for very casual driving and low tranny temperatures, things they get in the lab but rarely in real-life testing.
What a bunch of BS! under normal dirving you won't have a problem constantly shifting between 3-4 and heating up the trans like you claim. I have put over 300,000 between 3 C4's I owned with auto trans 86 to 93 and NEVER had a problem and ALWAYS used OD. If this was a problem, there would of been a ton of complaints not only on Vettes but ever car that uses OD, which is the majority of automatics on the road today.
In the vettes that use the 700R4 the computer does not control the shifts, the 4l60E and up trannys are controled by the computer. At any rate, drive in any gear you want, the 700R4 will eventually burn up
its not going to hurt it to leave it in D at high speed
Its not going to help it if you drive around in town with the car in OD. Leave it in D. The 3-4 shift is quick to wear out.
In most instances (including my own) the 3-4 clutch pack is the first to go in the 700r4. And the 700r4 when driving around the 35-45 mph range WILL constantly hunt between 3 and 4 when in (D). Its very obvious and occurs in every 700r4 equipped c4 I have ever been in. If it bothers you that much, have a new chip burned that raises the speed at which overdrive is applied in top gear to something a bit higher, then leave it in (D) all the time.
You should talk to a few transmission shops and also have to pay for 3 transmissions like I have. Not in the Corvette, because i baby it, but in other cars I had that used the 700. Dont say i abused 3 of those, because I damn sure didnt, and they were all factory transmissions.
700's shifts are NOT controlled by the ECM, so its not shifting when its told to.
The simple fact is that the 3-4 clutch pack will go first if you leave the car in OD and youre constantly going over and under 45, such that the 700 will shift itself between 3 and 4 almost constantly. There have been complaints, but its a transmission and powertrain warranties when our cars came out were short, just talk to a few builders and youll see that while the 700 is a strong tranny in comparison to other automatic models from GM and Ford, the 1-2 and 3-4 shifts are the first ones to go.

Please say this isn't as big of a issue on a 95 460lE because I drive from seneca to clemson U and varder as you know from seneca to clemson keeps you in that 45mph range so I'm going above and below 45 the entire time hanging around in that speed zone and I'm in OD 90% of the time so sounds like I should stick to just Drive in my commute. I'm usually in my daily so it's not a huge deal but want to do whats best for my vette when I do drive it.
They are a similar transmission. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I do believe the 4l60E is the electronicly controlled equivialnt of the 700. When I recently (two weeks ago!) had my 700 rebuilt I used 4l65E gears in it. The one used in the truck and new auto vette. It they fit in perfect. I got them off line from monster. and my tranny guy put them in. Boy that thing shifts nasty now and burns em up when I hit second.
My Vette hunts no where near as much as my 91 Blazer did, they are both very similar 700R4s the vette has beefier parts as compared to a 4.3 equipped vehicle.
