We are the delighted new owners of a 1987 coupe with two tops. We put the solid top on for the first time and by the end of the ride, the headliner was seriously messing up my hair. Has anyone out there repaired their own headliner? It doesn't seem really straightforward how to remove the frame around the headliner to re-glue it. Is this a job better left to the pro's? I have headliner glue and some experience in upholstery. Thank you!
I redid mine a couple months ago because it was sagging. I just removed the center part which is pretty cardboard or something covered with fabric. After I removed I took it to car upholstry place in town and they recovered it for 20 bucks and it looks better than new. I had to pry it out with a screwdriver or something dont really remember. Anyway, just make sure you keep the thing the fabric is attached to intact and you can get it recovered really cheap. I reattached it with some double sided tape and velcro pads.
Got my material from this guy on e-bay (Good Stuff), my headliner spray glue from AutoZone and did it myself. Figured if I screwed it up It didn't cost much anyways to do again. Especially after I was quoted around $150 from a few trim shops in the area to do it. Not a hard job at all. Just takes patience & the willingness to drive around without a top on for a day or 2 !!!

I fixed mine for about $7. Get a big piece of felt. I used red instead of black. Pull the old stuff off, and pick any pieces of loose stuff off. lay the felt down and trim it with a exacto knife, but leave some extra on the sides. Don't trim it close or you will leave gaps. Take a can of Elmers Craft Bond Spray adhesive and spray the area well. lay the felt down and stretch it out well making sure there are no wrinkles and smooth it out with your hand or a credit card. Instead of trimming it around the edges it is better if you use the back end of the razor to tuck it in on the edges rather than cutting it, so you don't have any gaps. It cost about $4 for the felt and $3 for the adhesive. If you use black it will look like the original headliner. I used a bright red that matched the paint.
I have pics but don't know how to post them
