My 96 original tires 12k look a little dull. Does the Tire Shine products cause cracking of the tires? Ive heard that Armor All is bad. So I was thinking of the Black Magic Tire Shine. Any thoughts? Do most of you use tire shine or just leave natural?
I don't I just wash them with the wheels. I'm sure folks will have lots of opinions on this. One thing to consider is black carbon is added to the rubber compound to make them black and to prevent deterioration from ultraviolet radiation. Some products contain chemicals or silicone which damage that an accelerate the rubber aging. That is what you see with the surface cracking. It is normal for the tire to slightly gray from the deep black color when new. The rubber itself is gray hence the black carbon.
The only tire 'gloss' I've ever used that I thought was worth a crap was Zaino's. Everything else is too glossy IMO, and I don't think tires look good being glossy. And yes, Armor all is garbage. Way too glossy and greasy looking on anything you put it on. And it used to (and probably still does) contain alcohol, which will dry up and crack your surfaces unless you keep it perpetually drenched in it..

I hate the glossy look, so for the past 4 or 5 years have been using STP Son of a Gun on all my tires (four cars). It gives that perfectly flat black look of a brand new tire and it lasts for months. Never had a weather-checking problem with the stuff either.
I've been using Black Magic and applying it with a sponge to achieve a satin finish and it definitely enhances the appearance while not being too "glossy."
