Default Newbie Question

Hi All.. Im new to the 94 C4. Ive been exporling the car and getting to know it.

What exactly is ASR? (im sure a dumb question. Please keep in mind Ive been a porsche guy for some years, and am not familiar with newer GM cars...shame on me)

And why would I want to turn it off?

I need to change the drive belt...is it a real pain? Other tahn a diagram and a breaker bar...any tips tricks? Looks like a tight squeez for the hands.

Is there a Drivers education I can take to learn more about driving this car...since its so foriegn to me? It hadles much different than Im used to. Its much different than the 79 I had 12 years ago. I see some similarites...but its very different.

Im quite impressed with the car. This car is very well balanced. Ive not always been a fan of the detroit plastic untill this purchase.

What have I been missing for all these years?

Dave

Welcome the the Corvette brotherhood and congrats on your new '94.

Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR) was an option introduced on the '92 Vette. If wheel spin is detected the system cuts power to the drive train till traction is restored. The main reason to turn it off would be if you wanted to do some agressive driving (like down the 1/4 mile) and wanted full driver control over throttle.

A good tool for changing the serpentine belt is a 1/2" breaker bar, a thin one. You place the end into the square hole in the tensioner and rotate toward the left fender till tension has been released on the belt.

If you turn your own wrenches (and it sounds like you do) get a copy of the GM Shop Manual (from Helm) for your car.

For performance mods and repairs this C4 Forum is one of the best sources of info.

Enjoy the ride and save the wave.

Traction control was introduced as standard equipment on all 1992 Corvette models. Called Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR), Corvette's system was created by Bosch and developed in cooperation with Corvette engineers. It was engaged automatically with the ignition, but could be turned off by an instrument panel switch. Corvette's ASR used engine spark retard, throttle close down, and brake intervention to limit wheel spin when accelerating. When the system was on and active, the driver could feel a slight accelerator pedal pushback.

A home made option for removing the belt is a standard 3/8"" drive with a short socket. Cut a piece of PVC 3/4" to fit tight over the handle about 2 or so feet long. Remember to disconnect the coolant sensor wire so you don't accidently hit it.
