Default Leaf Springs

I've got a general question to everyone...why do the GM people love to use Leaf Springs on Vettes because I know they put them again on the new C6...is their some benifit to them? I'm fairly uneducated on and hope someone can help me understand.

Leaf springs mounted transversely save weight as only one spring is needed instead of 2 and they also act as a suspension member to help locate the suspension. Our composite springs are much lighter than metal and MUCH stronger and able to last longer than metal ones.
One of the only problems with them is they can de-laminate if certain oils or chemicals get on them. Also a nick or scratch can be a stress riser that can led to a crack. Be careful not to let the jack or any hard object bang into them.
