Is it possible to change the water pump without getting the opti wet? I've got a new opti-spark and am getting paranoid about the pump leaking now, and am thinking of changing it to be on the safe side.
Well it is usually recommended that you change the pump at the same time since you have to take it off anyhow. Basically your worried about nothing, after you drain the radiator and remove the old pump there will be no water left to get on the new opti, at worst you'll get the old one wet. Opti's arent as fragile as you think, they get wet everytime you drive in the rain. I have a 94 with the unvented version and I wash my engine often for car shows, I replaced the opti at 80,000 which is pretty good considering it after all is just a distributor cap and rotor that GM says to replace every 60,000 as part of schedualed maintenance. I believe that due to the location and cost/difficulty to replace, people would rather blame the engineering of it rather than concede that it is just part of routine maint, that HAS to be replaced whether you get it wet or not.
I'm having the dealership replace the opti as part of a warranty deal. I was going to have them replace the water pump while they were there, but they wanted $270 for just the pump. I would rather replace it myself later to save all that money. If there was a danger in getting it wet by changing the pump later, I would just change the appointment until after I could install a new one.
Get a Mezzaire Electric. No HP drain. Easier to fix next time. I hate to see you go with a Opti when Delteq Ignitions make everything easier to deal with.

I agree with the electric Meziere coolant pump, but not too many Chevy Dealerships will install an after market upgrade like that. So, make sure you install a NEW AC Delco pump, but keep the old pump for the future (possible) upgrade to the Meziere.
