I am replacing the ECM on a 1992 LT1. The AC Delco replacement ECM is a rebuilt (the only way you can get it) and the case (the metal housing) has a pretty lousy paint job. I was trying to keep the car original. Has anyone replaced the ECM and switched the cases? If so what is involved?
I have a 1990 and have replaced the BCM (some people refer to it as the ECM). It is the one inside the passenger compartment behind the radio. Not sure if this is the same part you are referencing, but if so, my new one came in an unpainted aluminum housing (same as the old one). Pretty simple to disasemble and reasemble... Just remove the screws and pull the printed circuit board out and install in your original housing.

I replaced my ECM a few months ago without any instruction. Its fairly easy to do.
1. Unscrew the 4 screws holding the ECM to the bracket
2. slide off the plastic cover over the wires
3. pull out the 4 wire plugs(probably hardest thing to do since you may have to pinch down hard on the top and bottom to unsnap each wire from the ECM)
4. pull out chip
5. reverse procedure to install
If ECM casing has bad paint job , why don't you just spray paint it a day before you install it?
