hi, my name is mike and i'm new here. i am currently a lt1 camaro owner, but some time over the next few months i will be selling the camaro and getting an lt1 vette. i was wondering if you guys could answer some questions for me.
1)how much power can the irs handle? i'm sure it must be more than the f-bods 10 bolts. (i hope it is )
2)the car will be a street strip car and i was wondering if wheel hop off the line with the irs is an issue.
3)what rear gear options are there?
4)is there any lt1 vette specific problems the did not occur in f-body's?
thanks for reading and i hope to be rolling with you guys soon
You will need the Dana 44 rearend which is standard on all manual transmissions. You will have a hard time blowing it out; axles and all. How much power are you planning on putting to it?
my camaro now has 340 rwhp and that is with a budget build na 355 so i am going fo a lot more than that with the vette. i will be nearing the 500 mark with a nitrous 355 (already starting to gather parts ) i've heard those dana 44's can take a beating but what came in the autos and are they as stong or close to it?
Dana 36 are in teh autos and the gear ratios are 2.59 and a performance ratio that is 3.07 which is a 3 carrier in the 36. I have the 3.07's and love it.
how does the dana 36 compare to the 44 in strength?
It doesn't. All the serious street/strip guys go with the 44, and the guys that run the hopped up autos usually swap it out if they are making the kind of power you are lookin' at. If not sooner or sooner the 36 will break
The dana 36 is plenty strong for the street. The problem starts when you stick drag slicks on it. Then it is only a matter of time. If you spin the tires the 36 is Ok. If you plan on drag racing the car. Sell the 36 while it is still worth something and use the $$ for a Dana44. ROCK ON
If you want 500hp at the road you will need about 600hp at the crank. To handle that much power you would need a built A4 but I don't know about the 6-speed. Also, the half-shafts may be an issue if you intend on going down the 1/4 mile. But we have a number of 10sec & 11sec Vettes in the Corvette Challenge so it is possible.
The car would be a good street/strip car but it will be something to handle as the Vette is much lighter than the F-body even though it handles better with stock suspension. Usually wheel hop isn't an issue with the C4.
Though 3.07 is one of the performance ratios I believe the later LT1s had a higher option available. Usually the guys like 3.54 with an A4 and 3.73 with a 6-speed tranny.
The main issues with the C4 are cowel shake and a little more body flex with the targa top off and problems when you get the opti spark wet (though the later LT1s had a vented opti).
I met a guy today that had a blower on a worked LS1 engine in his C5 (putting over 500hp to the ground) and he said that it is a real handful to launch with the traction control off (he only auto crosses with it).
Have fun with your search; if interested in different Vette features from year to year, pick up a copy of the "Corvette Black Book".
"Though 3.07 is one of the performance ratios I believe the later LT1s had a higher option available."
Nope the performance ratio for late automatic c4's was 3.07 thats what is in my 95 vert. The manuals have 3.45 maybe thats what you was thinking but remember 3.45 in the manual is basiclly = to 2.59 in the auto....a manual will always be geared lower to make up for shift time etcetc...
