Default LT1 Engine Rebuild

What is the average price for a LT1 engine rebuild? My '96 has 113K miles on it and I am thinking about having it rebuilt and or beefed up.

Anyone have an idea on the costs for both options?

If all you want to do is drive it, 113K on a modern computer controlled fuel injected V8 in a 3400lb car is nothing. I'd give it a tune and enjoy it, it'll last another 100K before you'll see any compression loss.

But what you really want to know is, can I give it a little more GO?!?!?! IMHO, yes. Since it's an A4, I'd go with the shift kit and looser TC. Then I'd add a 3.54 gear and some long tubes. You'll be pulling high 12's in good weather with a street kill 4.3 second 0-60. If you lose a trans or rear end on the way, well...that's what happens when you mod a car. Happens to 20K mile Vettes just as much as 100K mile Vettes.

Ok, say you have a 250K mile vette and are actually in need of a rebuild. How much might it cost?

Default funny response

I like the straight forward way SILVER dodged the question....just poking fun.

I am curious too. I have 147K on my 92. I really was thinking about a crate motor from GM. Its pricier, but it is a factory motor with a warranty. Plus. you can get them beefed from GM. When you are dealing with a vette, it is too expensive to risk getting one of those $1,000 auto parts blocks and try to save money.

I am guessing, but i would think you could get a 400Hp long block from your dealer, installed, for around $5-6K. I know its alot, but you will have a GM factory installed NEW engine. You will not have any problems for YEARS!!! Pro-quality, warranty, resaleability, and peace of mind is worth the bucks in the long haul.

If you have an LT1/4 your options for a GM replacement are limited to a rebuilt LT1 short block, with a core charge. The opti is required and none of those GM engines use an opti. In any case, all the ZZ4/Fastburn stuff is a product of the LT1 development, so most of the right stuff is in place already.

LT1 heads, some of the best SBC heads ever made
LT1 intake, one of the best SBC intakes ever made
LT1 short block, almost as good as a ZZ4, cast crank instead of forged, no real difference

The L98/LT1 fuel injection system really extends the life of the rings, no washing the cylinders with raw gas when the carb choke is on (or stuck?). If you have less than 200K miles, I doubt you're burning oil or losing power. That's why I'm trying to get you guys to save your $$ and invest it in performance upgrades (or hold on to your $$).

I'll shut up now,
Eric

we all understand that...but for the sake of curiosity, good lord, has anyone had their LT1/4 engine rebuilt and if so what did it cost?

I took my corvette to a local race shop that has a really good reputation. $4000 includes pulling and rebuilding the engine, replacing everything which needs it including the opti, and a full year warranty on the engine. I have two friends with corvettes who have both had engines done there and had all good things to say so I feel the $4000 is a good deal. I decided to do a couple other things while the engine is out see my sig.

At the same shop they said it would be $6000 to do a 383 stroker same deal. I decided not to do it because I didn't have enough money to do it right and buy everything else I would want to put on the 383 motor.

What I did buy: (all parts new, but most from forum members)

opti $200
ceramic coated headers $550
Fidanza flywheel $200
LT4 Hot Cam Kit $400
LT4 valve covers $185
LT4 knock module $35
clutch and pressure plate $400
used Borla (like new) $175
intake and head work $800

Good luck with your project!
