well I finally got my headers installed. the car sure is louder, but it doesnt' really feel faster. In fact, it doesn't feel fast at all until I get over 80 mph. I think the headers actually made it slower from a standing start. I have to really gun it to go anywhere.... I'm confused.
it's a '90, and I got the Hooker long-tube headers.

If you'll read all the threads, several of us think the Hooker's are too big for 350 l98's... and that they seem to sacrifice low end tourqe for high end HP. You're Hookers have 1 3/4" primaries right?
I hope you have fun with your purchase, and that you'll grow to like em more... but I am still confused as to why everyone swears by Hooker for the l98....

Do you have a stock TPI motor? The long tube runner design of the intake pretty much limits the power band to around 4500rpm. The long tube headers are designed to give you maximum horsepower, but at the expense of the low end torque. This is particularly bad thing on stock TPI motors since they are torque mosters with a decent HP rating.
To get the most out of those headers, you're going to have to look at matching an intake and cam to the headers... and gears also.
This is where the quest for speed gets fun... and expensive. Check out TPIS or SLP for advice on next mods. Good luck in your journey
yeah it's the stock TPI setup. I was planning on getting the TPIS MiniRam eventually. I knew the Hooker headers would shift the powerband to the upper RPMs, I just didn't realize how much that would affect the daily drivability of the car.
Just finished a Hooker install long tube with small bolt on mods. Before it ran 13:91 after the headers 13:63 By the way they weren't a piece of cake to install
I dont buy the TQ loss from 1 3/4" LT headers. I have TPIS headers and my dyno shows I gained HP and TQ across the board...
I don't buy it either, and I'm kinda hyper about everything. I don't have real number like you do, but by buttmeter tells me what you're showing. However, it should be noted that a header install will really shine once the other engine mods are in place.....1 3/4" are best if your running at least 350-375chp

there isn't a torque loss, so much as a gain sacrifice. With the right size header for an L98, You'll get about the same HP gain, with a much larger torque gain...
and 1 3/4" are best if your running at least 383+ CI
Yep you could use a sawzall I opted for a pair of tin snips to open it up then a smooth file for the finish work a little bit of semi gloss black and thats it. How about putting on some good plug wires and removing the cast alum piece directly behind the throttle body inside the plenum

This is why some of us stress the 1 5/8" header for the vast majority of applications, L98 AND LT1/4. Actually, 1 1/2" pipes would be great for mildly modded L98s, but no one makes them.
Nice car + homepage! Looks like you also added "Ported/Siamesed Plenum & Runners" with the headers.
Thanks.
I think mikey whipreck said it pretty well. The 1 3/4" headers probably didnt gain as much TQ as the 1 5/8" ones would have, but I certainly didnt lose any.
