Default Security question from a newbie

I just got a 89 corvette (my first ), which was a theft / recovery and t has the horns disconnected. I thought it was a result of the theft but the more I find out the more I think it is because the security system was always going off all of the time. Here is what I know (if you think this is not acturate let me know).

1. When I get in the car there is a clicking noise. I am assuming this is the security trying to blow the horns which are disconnected.

2. I have found that I can turn the clicking noise off by unlocking the passenger door with the key. Note: unlocking the driver door and starting the car does not turn off the clicking noise.

I think there is a problem in the locking mechanism of the driver door. Not sure if the ignition should turn it off or not.

My question: Does anyone know how the security system is armed and disarmed and what I should look for with the driver side not working? I would be doing the work myself assuming no special equipment is needed.

Thanks in advance,

Jim

i don't know about fixing it, but the alarm works like this: to arm it, lock the locks with the power lock function...to disarm it, open the door with your key from the outside. there have been several threads about this in the past weeks, i'd suggest doing a search for one of those...someone here will know more that i about fixing your problem...

First off, welcome to the Forum!!! :

The alarm should be disabled by unlocking the driver's side door with the key. Sounds like some bad wiring in the door. However, I could be wrong. I'm just going by how my '85's alarm works.

Good luck!

Thanks. I looked through several of the posts but did not see any that actually talked about my situation.

Thanks for the welcome... I guess I am goint to have to get someone to help with testing the wiring. I wasn't sure if there was some kind of switch that may have just gone bad, etc.

Man I love this car. It is a red convertible... I call it c4.5 because it has the C5 body upgrade. I also have a pure white 89 C4 that I am putting together... I was going to sell it but now I seriously considering keeping it also and restoring 100% C4.

Thanks for the quick response

Ok, after reading all of the security threads I think, I'm pretty sure the problem is with the drivers side door lock cylinder switch. Now, can anyone tell me if this is part of the cylinder or is attached to it... Do I have to go to GM for this or is there an aftermarket item. Has anyone replaced and if so are there any gotcha's. Again, thanks for the help.
