Spent the weekend in the North GA mtns everything was great till started to come home. Coming down the mtn (narrow 2-lane rd no where to pull over) front calipers hung up. By the time I could get to a shop 10-12 miles fried everything under the front end...replacing both front calipers, both rotors, rack, upper and lower ball joints master cylinder, brake lines pretty much everything under there..mech here in Savannah came up with a price of $3400 with him getting the parts, told him I would get them (with exception of rack) saved me about $800 but still a hit.. Thank goodness only have 8k in the car (94-coupe) but at least will have a brand new front end with warranty. and still have the 87.
Sorry so long just needed to vent a little.
ouch that bites.wonder what happened.if both sides stuck i would be thinking about the master cylinder.possibly a brake line coming apart from the inside plugged the port in the mc with a small piece of rubber.
oh wait,94? that would have an abs valve on it.eek, dont wanna buy one of those.heard they were about the same price as an engine.
hope your mechanic knows what hes doing.
make sure he has a clear explanation of what caused the failure and not just changing the obviously damaged parts.
good luck, glad to hear your only in 8k on that 94,you got lots of room to squirm around at that
I thought he was taking about the mileage , and if its 8m for the car . I would expect a few more things to go wrong . JMHO ...either way best of luck .
the only way the calipers would lock is if they seized, and that is possible... but since hydraulic brakes are normally open, it seems rather odd.
perhaps something got stuck? a stone/rock/pebble?
The forces on the ball joints could be harsh, but depending on miles, they could be shot, too.
You got a lot of work done, I hope you upgraded along the way - GS calipers, 13" rotors (if not on already), stainless steel lines - things like that. Perfect opportunity!
