I'm new to this and just wanted to make sure. My banker (vette fan) thought the VIN might indicate a ZR-1 - but obviously he knows about as much as me.
The sixth digit will be a number 2, 2= coupe, 3= conv
The fifth digit will be the letter Z
The eighth digit will be the letter J, J= the LT-5 engine
The twelvth digit will be the number 8
Help - Where in the VIN number can I tell a) what motor and b) whether the car is a ZR1 ?
Looking at one with VIN 1G1YY3388L5115895 - 1990 vert - automatic
The 5th and 8th positions tell this information. On a ZR-1 the 5th should be a Z instead of a Y. For the 8th position: 8 = L98, P = LT1, J = ZR1, 5 = LT4
1st digit: Nation of origin. 1= US
2nd digit: Manufacturer G=General Motors
3rd digit: Division 1=Chevrolet
4th, 5th digit: Car Line YY= Corvette YZ=ZR1
6rh digit: body type 2=hatchback coupe 3=convertible
7th digit: Restraint system 3 manual belts with airbag
8th digit: Engine Code 8=L98, J=LT5, P=LT1
9th digit: Check digit varies by car
10th digit: Year L-1990, M=1991, N=1992 and so on
11th digit: 5=Bowling Green Assmbly Plant
12th thru 17th digit: Sequential production number
While the 8th digit denotes the engine that was installed in the car, the "8" and "P" codes do not specify the transmission type. Both manual and automatic transmissions were available for the L98 and Lt1 motors. The ZR-1's LT5 motor and the LT4 motor in the 96 cars were only available with a manual transmission and all '96 LT-1's had auto trannys.

If the 12th digit is "8" its a ZR1. Note that the ZR1 and the 1996 Grand Sport (12th digit "6") were the only Corvettes to get their own production number sequence.
By the way...You dont need a VIN # to identify a ZR1 If ya cant tell by the wide rear end, simply pop the hood and count the runners. If it has 16 instead of 8 it's a ZR1 and not an L98, which was the other motor offered in 1990. But by the number you gave, it's an L98. Also, a ZR1 will have a full power pass key in the cockpit.
