I know this has been asked a million times. Are the goodyear f1's worth the money? From what I have researched, they seem to have the best wear rating and have good hydra scroes. I do mostly daily driving that is not so spirited. However, I would like a good performing tire that will last a good tens of thousands of miles. So how many miles did you get out of your f1's? Or another good option?
When I took delivery of my '88 in early Summer of 2000 there was 96k miles on the clock and a brand new set of GY Eagles (Gatorbacks I think) on it.
Over 4yrs later with 144k miles on the clock (and maybe 200 or more passes down the 1/4 mile) I need to replace them, mostly due to neglected front end alignment. If I had attended to periodic alignments I think it would be at least next summer before I would need tires.
Though I drag race with these tires and like to corner and turn hard I don't auto cross nor road race with them. Under my driving style I would say that my old Eagles were a 50k mile tire.
Anyway, I'm about to bite the $$ bullet and pick up a set of GY Eagle HP Ultra Plus from Tire Rack. I'm very interested in dry traction as well as some snow traction (which the originals had). Since the tread design of these new Eagles is very similar to my old ones, I'm hoping to get very similar performance from them.
Well, I'm not sure of the specs on the F1s but just today ordered (4) of the Eagles from Tire Rack; they will likely arrive Fri.
Check out the specs of each on Tire Rack and see which tire might suit your needs better.
I expect to have the Eagles mounted up next week after this weekend at English Town but in time for the Skyline Drive excursion; so I should have a little better feel on ride & handling in a few weeks. But of course I won't know about wear for a few years.
Shipped to my door they came to $800 and there will be another $100 for M&B & $100 for alignment, sooo I certainly hope to get some long service from them.
Another thing to keep in mind is that treadwear ratings are valid only between tires of the same manufacturer - i.e., a GY with a rating of 400 can wear completely different than a Pirelli of the same rating.
I'll offer an opinion about the Bridgestone Protenza 730s. They were part of the deal when I bought the car in June 01 with 38,500 on the clock. I just rolled past 90,000 (yeah, it dosen't sit still long) and am not close to the wear bars yet. Regular rotation, alignment and checking tire pressure are key. Of couse a wear rating of 360 dosen't hurt. They tend to be a bit noisey on long runs and trully screamed on the dyno. They were replaced by the 750s and I will consider them in the spring.
