I'm sort of in the same boat as you. I got hit in the door, cracked the door, and got quotes from several places. Got a check from the lady for $1000. I ordered a used door, and will be doing as much labor myself as possible.
But then, I've got paint problems on the rest of the car, the rear bumper needs to be done, the passenger side mirror, the front end couldn't hurt.. and by then it all adds up, I might as well get the whole car repainted.
Disassembling all the panels sounds like a huge pain in the azz just to save money on prep work. So I'm still scratching my head. My car is black though, so color matching wont be hard, but the repaint it has aalready is poor, they said the new paint finish will make the rest of the car look like garbage.
You're right about the black.
You're also right about the disasembly.
Get someone to fix you're old door.
Buy a book, prep the car yourself and then get it painted.
A properly prep "ready for paint" car shouldn't cost more than $1000.00 for a re-spray job.
Ready for paint now thats the big question?
What does that mean? It means the panter assumes no responsiblity for the quality of the finished product. Thats a bad painter that is. A good painter will make it right no matter what you bring in.
My Ruby Red was hit-new hood, new bumper, paint =$5000., I asked how much to do the rest of the car paint-$2500, well cash is a little low so I passed. Yesterday they called and said they would do it for $1400. because it won't look good with the old and the new, still I'm a little short-I say for $1000. I'd do it-they call back and say ok-it'll look good-but not show. They also say they don't want me to look over the additional paint with a magnifying glass-Hmmmmm! I say I won't-but I will look over the front with one-they say no problem. What do you guys think?
If that was in my shop I'd try to do the samething that is a complete.
Ruby Red would be a hard color to match. A color match depends on many things the condition of the old paint is no.1.
In your case the paint work is a big ***** of the estimate.
As far as blend goes i don't care for the "747" blend.
In order to blend the paint from the hood onto the doors the door will have to be re-coated with a clear coat after the blend coat so its really close to a complete at that point.
To finish the car with $1000.00 is really a cheap move.
Ya gits what you'se pays for. Find the extra money to git it done right.

Fixing the old door will cost about as much as a replacement. I think he's ordered a used door, so he's ahead right there.
I think a bid under $1000 would be for an inexpensive single stage paint, I double check: 1) single stage? 2) brand?
On the cost of paint:
I can tell you right now I'm color changing a '79 Blazer 2WD. The Blazer has cost me ~$1200 in paint (2 stage: PPG outside w/OMNI clear inside) & body prep materials, and I'm doing my own work. The only difference is I've gutted the interior out and have about $300 in extra paint (color coat, sealer & clear). Paint is expense by itself. Make sure you know what brand they'll use.
PPG is at least twice to three times costly as OMNI. It's not cheap to do this work, let alone pay someone (reliable) to perform tasks I can't or don't want to do. I'm cautious about anyone who can do this work for less money because I know they'll use cheap paint, skimp on costs, or just not prep correctly to save time. Time=money. I look at the savings I can make in getting a car painted in the labor that I can perform. If they aren't skimping or cutting costs, then they just love to do the work, and you can find painters/body men out there that will.
Get it out of there! If it doesnt seem right, it isn't. Made the mistake of leaving mine (my 67 elky)@ one like that....Whole car was stripped down to the VIN!!and my motor was in another car at his shop! Even w/proof of ownership I couldnt get a damn report out of the cop!!! A total loss. Founf the right shop and this "B" is going back together. An extreme example, and highly unlikely for you, but you never know. You get what you pay for
Someone scraped down the side of my parked 92 last week. He cracked my door and took big chunks out of the moldings. The estemate to have the door replaced and to have the car repainted was around $5000. The shop is a high quality shop. The paint and body work is even warranteed for as long as I oun my vette.
