3rd or overdrive around town?
Hello all
Just got my '88 with 4sp automatic on saturday and know I need to learn to drive it. In my throw-away cars I've always just run in OD all the time. I seem to recall reading in this forum once that the better practice is 3rd around town and save OD for expressway use - is this correct?

Yes, that is correct. That's the first and best way to smoke a trany-driving around in OD all time. Overdrive should only be used if you're going over 60 mph. Now if you're cruising through town at 60+ mph......

I use OD in 40mph or above zones unless the engine starts to lug which causes me to do a manual down shift.
I also down shift into 3rd when comming off the expressway or comming to a traffic signal.
