Default Timing Mark

88 convertible L98: Apologize for what might be a dumb question....What is the actual timing mark on the harmonic balancer? A dot, a line, etc? Went to set base timing, prev owner has painted a not too straight yellow mark on balancer and balancer a little cruddy. Hard to tell if we are at 6*, 7* or 8*
I bumped the balancer around to see, hard to tell (old eyes, poor lighting). I don't want to clean yellow mark off yet, as that is my only reference at this point. If I know what to look for, I'll break out the 6D Mag light some brake cleaner, long thin brush and have a closer look.

As always, thanks, in advance!

I know, I think it's a hollow dot. Kinda hard to see.

next time I am in there, I am gonna hit the GFs with paint, so I can see it better next time!!!

The timing mark on an '88 balancer is a line across the balancer. Wipe off the yellow paint and hit it with some fine sandpaper; do the same to the timing bracket on the engine so you can see the marks.

If you have not already removed the frisbee from the water pump pulley do so and you will gain 10chp and be able to clearly see the timing marks.

Thanks for the help. I'll be removing the frisbee tonite.
65Z01, I saw your writeup on your page, about replacing studs in waterpump pulley with bolts. Do you, offhand, know the size and thread pitch? If not, then I can certainly pull one of the studs and head for the hardware store.

After the frisbee comes off, then on to IDing the timing mark and cleaning balancer and bracket.
Again thanks for reading and responding. This forum is a great bunch of folks.

Everyone have a great day!
