Default Paint color Question

I am getting ready to paint my 84' and I had a couple of questions. The car has been repainted once and I am sanding it down to the original paint. The original red looks almost like a maroon. Was it originaly that dark or is it from fading? The original red is not bad but I was hoping for a brighter color. If I change colors does anyone have any suggestions for a bright red used on any of the newer vettes? I want to keek it a vette color. I looked at paint chips at the paint store and the 84' color didn't look that dark but it is hard tell being the paint chip is so small.
Thanks for any help!
Mark

There was only one shade of red used in `84, and they had lots of problems with it right away. In `85 they switched to Bright Red, which is very close in color to the `84 version.

`85-`92 Bright Red paint code WA-8774

Thanks for the replies! I thought something looked wrong with the color. I'll check out that bright red.

Red is the hardest color to keep up. Sun fades it real quick its also the most expensive to buy.
The org maroon is a nice color.

The dark red-maroon isn't bad, maybe it just looks bad because it is so faded out. I'm up in the air because I'd like to keep it original but I don't want it to fade the same way. Maybe the new paints will hold up better. I'll be using PPG base coat/ clear coat. Maybe I'll try to find a car that is that color to see what it is supposed to look like.

I painted my '85 with '98 Torch Red. Wow, it's a great color.

I'm in the same boat as you, but I've been told that getting the car media blasted is a much easier way to strip it down. I'm gonna look for a local place (should be easy to find in SoCal). I've got a peeled and baked original paint job with maaco on top of that, so it all needs to go. Sanding the whole car down sounds like a helluvaa lot of labor. What tools are you planning on using? Just an orbital or...?

It sounds like the paint job on this. The repaint is faded and peeling. I used a razor blade to peel alot of the second coat of paint off with and I'm pretty much hand sandingthe rest of the paint off. I have the hood and rear quarters sanded and primered, and I'm now working on sanding the front fascia. I figure this is probably the hard way to get it done, but I'm not going to paint it until spring so I'm in no hurry.
