Default Road Trip suggestions

Nov 14th I will taking a roadtrip from Houston, Tx to SW Kansas to visit family, pheasant hunt, and let them over the vette. I can't wait to get this baby on the road, especially the long flats in Kansas and see what she'll do. Any suggestions guys ? what to pack, tips, speed traps. I haven't been on the road in this car for more than a couple of hours at any one time.I'm looking at ten hours this time. Any experiences with bad weather? I've done all the precheck stuff-spare, oil, all fluids. I need a confidence boost before this trip. Any advice might help this goe a little smoother. I'm listening.

I bring tools(I have those plastic molded cases with all the sockets in it).belt tool, belt, tire plug kit,air compressor(which I just found out is a piece of crap, time for a new one). AAA card, cell phone, CC card, coolant,PS fluid, brake fluid, couple quarts of oil(Would you believe most of what I have listed fits behind the seat?)Maps,GPS would be nice. Plenty of CD's and cassettes. Flashlight.

Can't help you with the route or speed traps.

if the cops are as bad in south west Kansas as they are in north east Kansas, you better watch out. Good luck and have fun

Where in SW Kansas are you headed and what roads are you planning on taking? I live in that part of the state and might be able to help you out.

Heading to Satanta Ks, probally head north on 83 from Childress to Liberal. Thats a pretty curvey road, I guess as good as it gets in Texas.

That's only about 40 miles from me. I'm not sure about TX or OK but I wouldn't get to carried away on 83 in KS. KHP patrols that stretch pretty good and opening weekend for pheasants makes it even more so. Hwy 160 is a pretty good road and normally not overly patrolled, but again because of opening weekend, I'd be careful. You'll be travelling in the flatest part of the state HASKELL County. Wide open territory.

Hunting should be good if the weather cooperates, seems I heard people talk that we had a double hatch this year, so birds should be plentiful. Good luck, and if I can be of help post a message.

Thanks for the info, once I get to Liberal I'll coast the rest of the way, I'll be bringing my brother in law and we'll probally be spotting anything that moves on the shoulder. I've told him stories about the pheasant up there and he will get a chance to see it first hand. Will stay in touch . I definetly will be watching the weather I sure don't want to get caught in a storm.

I'm actually partial to the Ruger Red Label in twenty gauge for either birds...but that's just personal preferance.

Road trip?
We drive further on one of our SCMR's on a Saturday morning!!

I took my coupe from San Diego to SE Kansas (and back)last year and thoroughly enjoyed the drive. Just took a duffle bag with clothes... no tools, no oil, no spare parts. Just gas it up and hit the road. With a VISA card, you can handle any problems.....
Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!

I went to college in OK many years ago and drove the turnpike there. You would have to take a ticket and pay the distance you traveled when you exited. The thing was they also put a stamped time on your ticket, they knew then the time you left and the time you arrived at your exit, if you arrived too fast here's a ticket. So you could go 150 mph but you better pull over and wait for awhile. That was many moons ago, they might not have that anymore, but maybe they do. I used to fly across KS. Haven't been back there since, no ocean there.

That should be a fun drive to the border!!! 45 is a fun highway!!! I assume you are taking 35N into Oklahoma... watch it around the Fort Worth area... the 'copulation' gets quite thick. Be careful in Oklahoma too. The roads suck, there's nothing to look at, you want to speed but the cops are plentiful. I make the trip from St. Louis MO to Houston\San Antonio at least 3 times a year. I also lived in Oklahoma City and Tulsa... so I can say this from experience...

Do you know why Texas has not fallen into the ocean? Because Oklahoma sucks!!! Just playin'.

Anyway, The Quiktrip (gas stations) in Oklahoma City are nice... and any of the businesses run by Indian Tribes (Choctaw Texicos and others) are also nice places to stop and rest. They are generally very clean, organized, and well lit areas. I can not say the same for other petro stops.

Everytime I go thru OK, it seems that all the local municipalities have their own police dept that has nothing better to do than to harass tourists on the highway. Keep you foot off the gas pedal unless you have deep pockets to pay your fines.

The more I read, the more excited I get about this trip. The hunting part is presently over shadowed by the driving experience getting there. I've got to squeeze a Bro in law and all his hunting stuff in this car. I called him and informed him to pack lite also If his gun is longer than 33.5 inches(broke down) it isn't going. Luckily most of my stuff stays there, so that will help with space. Will be cramming emerg. stuff in every nook and cranny available. Hey, are radar detectors illegal in OK? Ignorance probally wont be a good enough excuse if I get pulled over.

the detector ticket is less $ than the speeding ticket.just tuck it away when not "needed".
dont want to worry you but check your weight rating on the right side door jam.its a little confusing but i finally figured out mine meant "no fat chicks"
think its like 600 lbs of cargo, including you guys.(i wouldnt be afraid of going over that figure on good roads-imo its just kinda like that coast gaurd tag on the back of any small boat-i.e. 10 hp max means 20 hp works ok)
maybe allow some time for a test drive around the block before you hit the freeway to make sure everything feels cool.

Default I always take....

I have taken many road trips and always take the same things I drive everyday with: Credit card. AAA card. Cell phone. Tire plugging kit and a tire sealer kit. Water to use and drink. And last a fire extinguisher.

Hey, Dads90 how was the trip to Kansas? Was the hunting any good? The weather sort of cooperated, however my experience with rain and hunting pheasants hasn't been the best. I definately wa thinking about you last weekend.

You mean I-44? If so, they don't do that anymore. I drive from Phoenix to Boston a couple times every summer and take I-44 up to I-70. I-44 is a blast, it's like the US version of the Autobahn. I was on there at about 2:30am and got PASSED when I was going a steady 110-120.
