Question about taking off cats
Kara, check this out... it got alittle heated but went into detail about cats.

If your area has smog tests, you will fail.
If you want to go deaf, you will.
And I want clean air to breathe.
You don't have any clue, do you? "one more car" "it won't matter". Kinda like the drunk who had "one more for the road" before wiping out the family wagon.
I disagree, 100% with your arguements.
Factories are smog producers, but they are also under EPA requirements to keep emissions down.
It appears that no one here bothered to read the link that Justardnck posted.
I feel it is our simple, civic responsibility to use the systems that are provided to us.
As for "choking" a car. That's the biggest pile of dung I have heard... and I keep hearing it. Read my comments in the thread linked above, and then we will discuss this again.
One of these days, the Feds are gonna figure this out, and start coming down on people who remove their cats. I can't wait until they start levying $10k fines...
As far as racing? Cats are impractical, if for no other reason than heat. Same goes with off-road emergency equipment.
But for a general use street car? I cannot approve of such behaviour. Never have, and never will.
Modern cats do not harm performance. At least not enough to be noticed (5 hp?). Gimmie a break.

From the original statement, it sounds like she is just concerned about sound right now, not the 5hp difference. If the cats are left in place, what else can help her make them louder?

I answered your question in the 2nd post...
The difference between the Vette and the Z28 is the exhaust design. The Z28 uses a central cat, whereas the Vette (LT5 and LT1/4) uses 2 cats, one on each bank. The end result is a lot more noise, that is not as nicely evened out via exhaust pulses.
If you want loud, ditch the resonator, but from what I have heard, it is loud, but, way unpleasant.
Check into resonator tips. They're little glass pack kinda things that go where the mufflers do. They're cheap and effective.
Another option is Magnaflow. Those are nice... rich tone, but not annoying.
I had elims on my 92... and I hated them. They sounded great outside, but inside, the boom was overwhelming. It killed me... I had them for 6 months before investing in Corsa's. When I went for inspection, nearly FAILED for too loud. At 3' of the pipes, engine at 2500rpm, it read 94.3 dB. That's just too much. The limit was 95 dB.
Those noise levels will result in hearing damage. And that was after I ditched the original tips and went with resonators, which made things QUIETER! I cannot imagine how loud it was before that!
Two days later, I ordered the Corsa system.
I will say, my hearing is uber sensative, so I cannot say if what bothered me, will bother you, I am just saying, be careful. C4 cabins are noted for amplifying any exhaust boom.
Another thing that might help, go ahead, remove the center resonator, but replace it with a custom X-pipe. That might work... The X-pipe will help even out the pulses, eliminating some of the boom.
True duals are not a real performance advantage, for just that reason. The X-pipe (or H-pipe) will improve exhaust performance by better scavaging the gasses. It also helps sound.... Even NASCAR uses versions of this design.
oh, the factory LT4 had an H-pipe, I believe.
some food for thought.

Removing cats, and putting on elims or other high flow mufflers will make these things SO loud you won't wanna be in it.
