Dont get to excited i am asking about stripping the paint off my 1984 corvette. i enjoy doing most of the bull work and then i am going to turn the rest of the job over to the pros. so can anyone lead me in the right direction? please... thanks G-man1984
There are basically 3 ways to strip paint. 1. have it media blasted. 2 Sand the paint off. and 3 chemical stripper. Media will be the quickest and easiest but will cost somewhere around $5-800. Even then there are risks that the blaster guy will screw up the fiberglass if he is not real careful. Sanding will take a long time and depending on your experience and abilility to operate a sander also can be dangerous to the surface. I would opt for chemical stripper. I like Capt. Lee's. You spray it on and the paint bubbles and you scrape it off with a wide putty knife or plastic bondo spreader. If you use chemical be sure to protect your hands and lungs. Also, mask up the door edges and all the trim so it doesn't run in and on things that could be damaged. If you don't mind grunt work you can do a great job and save alot of $.
thanks for the info, i all ready removed all the moldings and window weatherstriping. i will start this as soon as i get the chemical. thanks again...
Be sure to read the precautionary warning first! All of the strippers we've used on the job have a warning that reads: Not intended for use on Fiberglass.

That's why I like Capt. Lee's. It is safe on fiberglass.
I ordered a stripper that is for corvette and fiberglass. it is called corvette and fiberglass stripper the tech told me the others would warp the body pannels. so i will keep you posted on the progress. thanks again.
I started stripping today. looks good but it is a mild stripper so i think it will take a while, and there is like 3 layers of paint and clear over them.
the bumpers are all ready off all the weather stripping is gone the lights and markers are removedand i scuffed the clear coat. the reason i am going through this is because some one hit it in the parking lot at work and a friend said if you are going to fix it than do it once and do it right so i am. the car will be red again but not sure what shade?

Be patiant Gman, all strippers will require much more time in cooler climates. Good find on the Corvette Stripper!
