Default Another Dumb Newbie Question....

What size pipe goes into the mufflers on a '92 LT-1? I know it's probably been asked a zillion times, but I just gotta know.

I have the LT-4, but I've been told that they are the same exhaust less the H pipe. On mine, it is 2.75" outside diameter that radiuses down to 2½" at the muffler enterance. I hope that is what you were looking for.

Thanks. Yours may be larger than mine, being an LT4. I've heard any where from 2.25 to 2.75. Hasn't been to great of weather to go under and actually measure it. I was just curious. I know quite a bit happened to the exhaust from 90-92.

All LTx engines had the same diameter exhaust pipe. The LT4s had the H-pipe added. The pipe does appear to neck down to about 2.5" or less just before the muffler.

If you're going to be replacing just the mufflers you would want to cut the pipe at the 2.75" diameter part and then attach the new ones. Don't buy mufflers to fit the necked down pipe because then you're not really improving the flow (other than reducing backpressure a little bit w/ a free flowing muffler).

I do know it reduces to a 2½" pipe at the mufflers. I spoke to a muffler shop about installing the mufflers because where the bend of the pipe is that curves to the pipe would have been difficult to work with in my garage. Anyway, long story short... I bought 2½" Hooker AeroChambers and welded those in myself.

How are they working for you, kwik?
I bought 3" Aerochambers and after necking the inlet down, welded them to the 2.75" section myself, too.
The Aerochamber looks like it was designed for the late C4...the muffler's shape fits the space perfectly, even exactly matching the shape of the spare carrier.

I love my AeroChambers. I didn't want anything too loud, but I wanted something with a more agressive tone than factory. I installed those, a hypertech tune, 160* stat, TB bypass, and cut the lid with a K&N and noticed a HUGE difference!!! or more than I expected.

The internal resonance in 6th gear is more than I cared for so I added some insulation above the muffler to keep the noise down and I'm very pleased with it.

The guy at the muffler shop is telling me that it only has 2.25" pipe. Looks bigger than that just looking at it. I told him I thought it was bigger, so he said to bring it in and he would have a look see. I would almost bet it's larger than 2.25".

I'm having the Flowmaster Super 40's put on as they have less resonance inside the car, but still sound good outside, plus they have a black case on them, instead of silver.

L98s have 2.25 pipes. Maybe that's what the muffler shop's thinking...

I experienced the same resonance.
Will have to try the insulation trick.

Yeah, I actually crawled under and measured the pipe yesterday with my calipers. Definitely larger than 2.25", just shy of 3" where I was measuring, that's outside diameter, deducting some for the pipe thickness and my errors, comes out to about 2.75"
