im in the middle of rebuilding my 85 got the engin redone with performance parts of course. got it running. any way back to the subject. I pulled the old carpet up the other day. i knew that the piece of the allum. was missing in front of the passenger side. I knew that that side was bent in but all the fiberglass in the floor was cracked to *****. i dont know wether to cut out the fiberglass and redo the floor or get a sheet of allum. to rivit over the whole passenger side. what do u all think i should do???

A while back someone posted doing exactly that. Forming a pan and then glassed, or epoxied it in-you might find the post-wasn't to long ago.

Isn't the floor made of balsa wood? I know this sounds really, really odd...but I swear I've read this in multiple places.

Could be wrong of course...can't believe all that you read

I had a similar problem. Got a small sheet of aluminum, formed it to fit then epoxyed it in place with some bonding agent a local paint shop sold me( not cheap but good). Riveted in from the inside then glassed over the entire area, both insde and out with roving and epoxy resin. May have been ovetrkill but it won't crack anytime soon. BTW this was a one day job. Not as hard as it sounds.

On the C5 and C6, yes. It's a composite of fibreglass, balsa and another layer of fibreglass.

Several years ago, a company used the same equation to make RC car chassis'. These suckers were SO damned stiff!!!

I think they start with a 4" thick piece of balsa, then press it between the layers of fibreglass. It is so damned rigid and light, amazing stuff.
