That is of the torque converter.....I found an old post (by MarcoPolo) about locking and unlocking the torque converter and was wondering if anyone knows if this will apply to an 86.

Hook up a switch to the purple wire by the brake pedal, and you will have control to unlock the torque converter at anytime.

To do the opposite, which is lock the converter anytime you want, you can jumper the TCC on the ALDL with a paperclip. It won't lock in first gear, but as soon as you hit second, it will lock and stay locked. Connect A and F on the ALDL.... see the image below.

I spend a considerable amount of time in the 35-45 MPH range around town and such. To lock the TC early would be an advantage for gas mileage and comfort as the TC now is always "hunting". A manual unlock for the same reason and when WOT through the twistys.

Well, since IBEAM and Redwing are the only wisecrackers that obviously don't know the answer to the question, I spent some quality time in the manuals and found the answer.

Thanks & Merry Christmas to All

So are you saying that you just interrupt the purple wire? Thanks for posting how to control these two functions. I've been wanting to obtain this info.

Well, unlocking the converter will not improve your gas mileage infact it will lessen it.
The purpose of the lock up is for efficiency. At 40 mph the two halves of the converter are moving at almost the same speed so in your cruzing range you'll see very, very, little difference if any.

The lock up locks the two halves together for less slipage and improved
efficiency.

If your running OD at 35-45 miles per hour drop out of OD.
Are you sure that the hunting you now feel isn't the 3-4 gear looking for the right rpm/torque?

Excessive hunting for a lower/higher gear will eventually wear out the 3-4 clutch and band set in the 700r4.

Theres virtually no point in disconnecting the converter lock up.

I don't see much point in unlocking the TC but locking it might give a little better mileage and consistency around the lock/unlock point.

Also I've been told that locking the TCC after the 1-2 shift will produce best 1/4 mile results. I've tried this with the IROC and seen no difference in time slips but not yet with the Vette.

Indeed you can wire a mini-LED in series with a 2.2k Ohm 1/4 Watt resistor across the ALDL pins A & F to serve as an indicator light. Light On/Off=unlocked/locked TCC status.
