argh. was transporting a ladder in my vette the other day and it pushed in a section of the dash and cracked the surface, about an inch square. can i pull the dash, fill the crack with some kind of filler, and just repaint the whole thing? what kind of filler should I use?

Try taking to an upholstry shop. Also here in town is a guy called Mr. Vinyl that fixes stuff like that, check yellow pages.
